Indians earn 3rd straight win

HILLSBORO — The Hillsboro Indians are starting to show that not only can they win games with their athleticism, but they can grind out a victory as well.
That is exactly what they did Tuesday night against the Eastern Brown Warriors of the Southern Hills League. HHS put distance between themselves and the Warriors in the early stages of the fourth with a run of 11-2 to defend their home court with a 56-48 win.
Being their third consecutive win since starting the season at 0-2, the Indians (1-0, 3-2) used their defense in the second quarter to hold EB (0-1, 0-3) to four points, and by halftime, HHS led 24-19.
Eastern scored more points in the third (16-12), cutting the Hillsboro lead to 40-35, but the aforementioned 11-2 run started with 1:08 left in the third on a 3-pointer by Hillsboro's Jarrod Hart and a jumper off an inbound pass from Tyrand Cumberland to end the third frame.
Hillsboro began the fourth with points by Chase Gilliland (off a steal by Hart), and after a jumper from the Warriors' Jordan Payne, the Indians tallied four more points off baskets by Tyrand and Tyiá Cumberland for a 46-37 HHS lead with 5:25 left in the ball game.
Eastern did make it a five-point game again when Payne made back-to-back shots on fast breaks, but Hart was there again with points, as was Gilliland with two free throws, leaving 2:00 left on the clock for a 50-41 advantage.
The teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the game, but any comeback by the Warriors was stopped as the Tribe made six of the last eight free-throw attempts.
"We went to a smaller lineup in the fourth. We went to a four-guard, sometimes a five-guard lineup because we knew they were going to trap us and find a way to turn us over, which they had done throughout the game," Hillsboro head coach Brett Prince said. "We wanted more ball-handlers out there for one, to take care of the ball, and two to spread them out and make them come out and guard us.
"I guess you can say we closed the game, but we took some really ill-advised shots with two minutes left, but those are just learning experiences."
Hillsboro was led in scoring by Gilliland with 11, followed by Táron Captain and Christian Cundiff with 10 points each. Tyrand Cumberland and Dévante Ames each scored nine points. Jarrod Hart added five, and Tyiá Cumberland added two points.
Leading the Warriors were Nathan Scott with 16 points and Jordan Payne with 13.
A lot of the scoring came in the first quarter as both teams combined for 28 points, with the Indians leading 15-13 after eight minutes ticked off the clock.
The Warriors were first to score with a 3-pointer from Josh Boudreau. Cundiff not only saw his 3-pointer, but raised him with back-to-back 3-pointers for the Indians to give HHS a 6-3 lead.
The lead continued to exchange hands as both teams equaled the other on their trips down the court with five more lead changes, not including the score being tied twice at 11 and 13.
Cundiff cut the EB lead to 11-9 with a free throw and Ames tied the score with a fast-break layup as Gilliland found Ames in transition with a half-court pass, leaving 2:47 on the first-quarter clock.
Gilliland then put HHS up two points with a field goal, but the score was tied at 13 when Scott sank a jumper while being fouled. EB then took the lead off a missed free-throw rebound and basket by Scott for the final points of the first.
HHS outscored EB by seven points in the second, but neither team was able to get into an offensive rhythm. Cundiff opened the quarter with a 3-pointer, followed by a layup from Captain.
The Indians wrapped up the second frame on a 6-2 run with points by Captain, Ames and Gilliland.
"There were times where we played well, but what we practiced we didn't do on the court tonight. We knew what they (EB) were going to run, they've ran it for years and do it well," Prince said. "We had a lot of mental lapses and our communication was poor, but we made some hustle plays, and that made up for some of our lack of execution. I know a lot of our points during that run came off hustle plays. We got some tips and run outs.
"They (EB) did a nice job against our press and got some easy points. Typically we know we'll give up some easy points in our press, but we also think we will equal that by getting in our tempo, and getting some turnovers out of it. Our press (Tuesday) struggled."
Besides the Indians ending the third with five straight points, they just couldn't get in the rhythm they have become accustomed at times to this season.
At one point in the third, EB had an 6-2 run with Conner Purdin and Scott cutting the HHS lead to one point at 30-29.
After a 3-pointer by Tyrand Cumberland, EB again made it a one-possession game in the third at 33-31, with a bucket from Gunner Pollitt. With 1:29 left on the third-quarter clock, it became a 35-35 game with a basket by Scott. After those points, the five-point run by HHS to end the third began the game-changing 11-2 run by HHS.
The Indians will be back in action on Friday as they host the Washington Blue Lions in a South Central Ohio League showdown. The freshman game starts at 4:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, the HHS freshmen and JV teams both won as the JV finished with a 42-38 victory, and the freshmen won 39-32.
In the JV game, Latrell Haithcock led HHS with 15 points. Zach Young followed with nine. In the freshman game, Jacob Aber scored 11 to lead the Indians, and Alex VanZant followed with nine.
