Indians back on winning track

HILLSBORO — After suffering four losses in their past four games, the Hillsboro Indians moved back to the winning side of the scoreboard Monday, opening the week with a 6-3 South Central Ohio League win against the Washington Blue Lions at Shaffer Park.
The Indians had to wait a few days since their last game with breaks in the schedule, along with a rainout on Saturday … and it was easy to see the team was well-rested, as they took a 3-0 lead following the first two innings, allowed the game to be tied, only to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, enough to secure their fifth SCOL win in seven chances this season.
Hillsboro's win over Washington not only puts them at 5-2 in the SCOL standings, but moves them to the .500 mark overall at 7-7 on the season.
"It's good to be on the winning side of things again," HHS head coach Tim Hunt said. "It's also great this is another league win."
To gain the win, not only did Hillsboro score runs, but the pitching duo of starting pitcher Tyler Griego and relief pitcher Seth Meyer combined to hold the Blue Lions to three runs on eight hits and six walks.
Griego pitched five innings for the no decision, and Meyer pitched the final two innings to earn the win, as he entered the game with the score tied at three.
"Tyler pitched a great game, and he was right at 102 pitches on the day, so we took him out," Hunt said. "For the most part, he was around the zone.
"Seth threw well for us. As a sophomore, he showed great composure when he was out there."
Hunt also spoke about how he liked how his team kept their composure when the Blue Lions scored their runs, and how he liked his team's patience at the plate on Monday.
For the game, HHS totaled six hits and six walks, with Paul Snyder leading the way at 2-for-4 with one run and three RBIs.
"Paul had a great day at the plate," Hunt said. "I'm proud of how the way we kept our composure (Monday) … during the four-game skid, keeping our composure was a problem.
"The kids showed patience, and discipline at the plate, and that's what helped us in the sixth inning."
[[In-content Ad]]HHS scored their first two runs in the bottom of the first inning with Kyler White opening the Indians' inning at the plate with a walk. With two outs, including a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Wilson, Snyder singled up the middle, scoring White.
Griego followed with a walk, and Snyder scored on a two-out base hit up the middle by Ty Crum.
The Indians made it a 3-0 score with White (who singled) scoring on a hit by Wilson.
Washington scored two runs in the third and one more in the top of the sixth, tying the score at 3-3. Washington had a missed opportunity to score runs in the top of the fifth as they loaded the bases with two outs, only to see Griego free the batter at the plate for a called strike three to end the inning.
The Tribe took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth with Wilson, Williams and Chase Gilliland all rounding the bases for the three-run inning.
HHS began the inning with Williams reaching the bases after being hit by a pitch, and with one out, Gilliland drew a walk, his second on the game. All three runs were scored with two outs, as Wilson reached on a walk, and Walker and Snyder each hit singles.
The Indians will play at home on Tuesday, as they will host Clermont Northeastern in a makeup of Saturday's rainout. On Wednesday, HHS will travel to Clarksville to face Clinton-Massie in an SCOL contest. On Friday, April 20, the Indians will host the McClain Tigers.
