Indians attack early, run-rule rival Tigers

GREENFIELD — The runs came early and often on the road for the Hillsboro Indians Monday night, which was enough to earn a 15-3 run-rule South Central Ohio League victory over cross-county rival McClain at Mitchell Park.
HHS controlled a vast majority of the game, to the point they led 11-0 after three innings.
The game belonged to the Indians, as they reached the bases either by hit, walk, getting hit by a pitch, on error or even on a fielder's choice.
"I'm happy with the outcome (Monday), but we got a bit complacent in the fourth inning," HHS head coach Tim Hunt said. "I want us to keep focus the entire game and not be satisfied.
"We got too satisfied in the fourth, but we have to get past that, and that's the type of mindset we need every game."
Leading the Indians at the plate was Corey Walker, who was 4-for-4 with two runs. Walker continued his hot bat from the weekend, as he hit a home run on Saturday against Indian Hill in a 9-7 HHS win that day.
As for Monday, the Indians scored five runs in the first with Kyler White, Brandon Wilson, Walker, Paul Snyder and Chase Gilliland all crossing home plate, as nine HHS batters went to the plate in the inning.
White and Wilson began the inning by forcing walks and scored on a double by Walker. Snyder followed with a walk. Following two outs, Gilliland reached on an error, allowing Snyder to eventually cross home plate.
Gilliland also crossed home on an infield error for a 5-0 HHS lead after one inning.
"Hillsboro hit the ball well and when they hit it … they hit it with authority," McClain head coach Brandon Streitenberger said. "Their pitcher (Brandon Wilson) pitched very well, and there was only one inning where we made any noise against them.
"We've struggled at the plate so far this year, and we need to keep working at it. The kids need to just keep plugging away."
For the game, the Indians tallied 12 hits, five walks, one sacrifice, one hit-by-pitch and reached base on error two times.
"So far this year, our lineup is explosive," Hunt said. "We are in a good place for now at 3-0 in the league."
In the second, White (three total runs) scored on a single by Walker, and the Indians followed that with five more runs in the third with White, Walker, Ty Crum, Gilliland (2-for-4) and Meyer (3-for-4) all crossing home plate on six hits and one hit-by-pitch as HHS sent 10 batters to the plate.
In the fifth, HHS put the game out of reach with four runs as Wilson, Snyder, Crum and Gilliland all scored. Gilliland scored three runs.
The win went to Wilson, who pitched all five innings for the Tribe. He improved to 2-0 in SCOL games this season. The senior hurler allowed three runs on three hits, one walk and one hit-by-pitch. Wilson struck out seven batters.
"Brandon has two quality league starts and two wins to go with his performances," Hunt said. "We keep getting better defense, we're cutting our errors down and everyone played well."
McClain scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with Ryan Case, Kyle Flora and Cameron Spangler all crossing home plate.
The loss was charged to Flora.
On Saturday, the Indians split a doubleheader, defeating Indian Hill, 9-7 and losing to Summit Country Day, 2-0. Against Indian Hill, HHS was led at the plate by Walker, Snyder and Gilliland with two hits each. In that game, the winning pitcher was Levi Fleming.
The Indians will play again on Wednesday when they host the Miami Trace Panthers at Shaffer Park, starting at 5 p.m.
MHS will play again on Tuesday as they host Waverly at 5 p.m. On Wednesday, their game against London is now a home game at 5 p.m., as it was originally an away game.
