Improving Lady Indians fall to Lady Broncos

HILLSBORO — Playing their second game in three days, the Hillsboro Lady Indians didn't go without energy, winning two of the four quarters. They gambled in the final frame in their quest to take the lead, but in the end, the Western Brown Lady Broncos were too strong as they defeated Hillsboro 58-40 Monday night in a non-league game at HHS.
After the second quarter, Hillsboro trailed by just seven points as they outscored WB 13-12 in the eight-minute frame, and it was just a six-point deficit for HHS after three quarters as, again, HHS won the quarter 11-10.
Then in the fourth, Hillsboro was outscored 20-8 en route to their sixth loss of the season. HHS now stands at 1-6 overall, with a South Central Ohio League mark of 1-4.
"They outscored us 20-8, but we are gambling and trying to get back into the game. We gave up some easy baskets because we are trying to win," HHS head coach JR Moberly said. "We missed some easy looks that if we throw some of those in, get our press set up, maybe it's a different game and have a shot at it."
In between the first frame and the fourth where HHS was outscored a combined 36-12, HHS played two quality quarters of basketball where they outscored their opponent 24-22, cutting the WB lead to six points after 24 minutes of play.
Trailing 16-8 at the start of the second, Taylor Moberly was first to score with a jumper. After WB answered with two points, HHS scored five of the next seven points with Hannah Kibler converting a free throw, Trista Rhodes sinking a jumper and Danielle Gillman cutting the Lady Broncos' lead to five points with a two-point bucket. Gillman finished with a team-high nine points.
WB eventually increased their lead to 28-17 with an 8-2 run, but HHS continued to fight as they ended the quarter with four free throws by Carey Juillerat, making it a seven-point game at the half. Juillerat totaled eight points, finishing 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
"Carey did a nice job tonight defensively," Moberly said. "She got some help from other kids who were able to execute fundamental principles better tonight, and that's what we're looking for.
The Lady Broncos opened the third with a strong 5-0 run, but HHS responded with five straight points of their own from Kaylynn Bell, Juillerat and Gillman. Bell ended the game with eight points.
After a basket by Western Brown's Delayne Seigla, HHS ended the quarter with a 6-2 run including a layup by Gillman, a jumper from the corner by Hannah Kibler and points off a turnover by Kibler. Kibler wrapped up the game with seven points.
"I thought we did a nice job of getting the ball to our post players, and we were able to convert a couple," Moberly said. "Defensively, we gave up a lot of points (Monday), but I think our girls did a nice job defensively in some of the smaller things we've been looking for this season."
Leading Western Brown was Taylor Henry with 16 points, 12 coming in the first half. Kylie Garrett finished with 15 points, including two fourth-quarter 3-pointers that put WB ahead 46-34 with 6:07 left on the clock. Morgan Wright also scored in double figures for WB with 12 points. Wright was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line.
For the game, WB went 12-of-13 from the charity stripe.
"It's been a tough stretch, but the kids came out and played hard … stayed with it, didn't put their heads down and kept battling," Moberly said. "We just didn't get the ball to fall for us, and they (WB) got theirs to fall, and that's the difference."
Hillsboro will play their fourth game in eight days this Wednesday as they host the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs in the 2011-12 Highland County Shootout at 8 p.m.
In JV play on Monday night, the Lady Broncos defeated HHS 51-31. Leading HHS were Mariah Burns with 10 points and Taylor Stanforth with six points.
