Hollon gains 100th win; PV tops Adena

It was a homecoming to remember for a variety of reasons for the Paint Valley Bearcats on Friday night as they defeated the Adena Warriors 35-33 and Paint Valley head coach Pete Hollon gained his 100th career win as the PV head coach.
Not only was it a big night for those reasons, but at different points in the Scioto Valley Conference game, the Bearcats overcame deficits of 20-0 and 26-7 in the first half.
"Though we had a slow first half, this was a big win for us," Hollon said. "Adena is strong, and they were healthy, but this was a good win. We faced speed offensive teams the previous two weeks, so it was nice to see how we responded against a team that just ran the football at us."
Adena (2-2, 3-4) scored the first three touchdowns of the game with a 12-0 lead after the first quarter, and later the aforementioned 20-point lead. Adena scored on a 22-yard catch by Michael Bryant off a pass by Caleb Bennett and a 7-yard run by Ryan Wells for a 12-0 lead as AHS was unable to score on a PAT and 2-point conversion. The lead went to 20 points in the second quarter with a touchdown by Devante Nesbitt.
Paint Valley (2-2, 4-2-1) responded after a slow start where they had their first fumble lost of the season, and following a first quarter where they were held to negative-16 yards and had multiple penalties … after all that, the Bearcats responded with a 44-yard run by Quentin Tesi with a PAT by Mark Clifford. On the first TD drive, Clifford had a 35-yard catch as the drive went 85 yards.
Tesi led PV in rushing with 18 carries for 137 yards and two TDs.
"Quentin has been banged up this season with an ankle injury, but he ran like a man possessed this game," Hollon said. "The offensive line was healthy this week, and it was a huge difference for us offensively as we had 11 first downs in the second half.
"The o-line controlled the tempo of the game in the second half."
Adena answered with their fourth TD of the first half with a 4-yard TD by Nesbitt with 47 seconds left in the first half.

With no time left on the clock following a pass interference penalty, the Bearcats reached the end zone for the second time with Clifford going 4 yards for a score, and he also kicked his second PAT of the game as PV trailed 26-14 at the half. The drive began with a good kickoff return by Teagan McFadden and had quality runs by Tesi. There were also back-to-back pass interference penalties to set up the TD by Clifford, who went 4 yards on a quick pitch.
PV was the lone team to score in the third as Anthony McFadden scored on a 2-yard run. The PAT by Clifford brought the Bearcats within five points of Adena.
The Bearcats outscored the Warriors 14-7 in the final 12 minutes with Tesi scoring for PV on a 56-yard run. A 2-point conversion off a pass by McFadden to Michael McCloy. McFadden finished 6-for-14 for 132 yards as the PV offense totaled 304 yards.
Adena, again, responded with a TD of their own when Fletcher Anderson caught a 67-yard TD pass from Bennett as the PAT was good to put AHS back in the lead at 33-29.
The Bearcats struck last when Clifford went 20 yards on a pass by McFadden for the eventual 35-33 lead. The PAT was blocked. The final TD was a stressful drive for PV as they gained possession with 3:00 on the clock. After getting the ball 35 yards to a first-and-goal, PV had a 10-yard penalty, and after a second-and-goal where the QB was sacked, Clifford gained the pass on third down, moved left, then went right as he finally reached the end zone for the PV lead.
"That play was a great call by coach Joe Boggs," Hollon said. "He called the right play there, and our players did their jobs."
The PV defense finished by holding AHS to a net total of 143 yards of offense, due to the help of Clifford's punting games with one punt sailing 65 yards and an interception by Dallas Immell in the fourth quarter.
Also defensively for PV, Nate Yoakum totaled 19 tackles, followed by Teagan McFadden with 13. Tesi and Clifford each totaled eight tackles and two sacks.
Hollon also spoke about the 100th win as head coach.
"It's special to be able to get this win in front of my entire family," Hollon said. "To get it in crazy fashion, and I'm humbled to get all 100 wins at one place.
"I've been blessed with great players and great coaches. This is something I'm proud of … to do this at a small school, with the ups and downs through the years … it's just special."
PV will host Piketon (3-1, 5-2) this Friday.
