Hitting Spree: McClain gains 25 hits in win over Waverly

GREENFIELD — The McClain Lady Tigers went on a hitting spree Tuesday afternoon and defended their home field with 25 hits, for a 16-8 non-league win over the Waverly Lady Tigers.
MHS went a perfect 10-for-10 at the plate as all 10 players who stepped to the batter's box gained at least one hit.
"Wow, I have to credit my girls, we put up 25 hits against a quality pitcher," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. "They (WHS) made their run, and we battled back and answered. We never got down, we just kept fighting.
"We have to continue to hit the ball like we did today if we want to contend in the SCOL."
Leading the way for MHS were Cierra Landrum and Jenna Perie, as each batter went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, with Landrum hitting four singles and two runs and drawing two walks, as she reached the bases a total of six times. Landrum totaled 15 bases against Waverly.
In Perie's time at the plate, the senior hit a home run in the fourth inning and a double, drew one walk, scored one run and collected three RBIs.
Shania Massie, Kate Crabtree and Emily Sterling each tallied three hits, with Massie going 3-for-5 with three runs, a two-run home run in the fourth and a total of three RBIs.
Crabtree was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, one walk and a double. Sterling tallied two RBIs.
Gaining two hits were Morgan Dettwiller, Sasha Lawwell and Ali Willett. Dettwiller totaled two RBIs and a double; Lawwell had two runs; and Willett totaled two RBIs and one run.
Brittany Mullikin totaled one hit and one walk. Katy Unger was 1-for-1 with one RBI. Sarah Thompson scored three runs as a courtesy runner, and Caitlin Lovett scored one run as a courtesy runner.
As for the MHS scoring, they led 4-2 after the first inning with Landrum, Thompson, Dettwiller and Crabtree all scoring runs. RBIs in the inning went to Dettwiller, Crabtree and Sterling, with Crabtree hitting a two-run double.
In the second, MHS added two runs, with Massie and Thompson scoring off hits by Perie and Dettwiller.
In the third, MHS scored four more runs with Lawwell, Willett, Massie and Thompson. RBIs in the inning went to Massie, Thompson, Crabtree and Sterling.
The fourth inning saw MHS score three runs with two home runs as Massie hit a two-run homer with two outs, scoring Landrum. Perie, in the next at-bat, hit a solo home run.
Scoring runs in the fifth for MHS were Mullikin and Lawwell off a two-run ground out to short by Willett.
The final MHS run came in the sixth with Sterling scoring on a base hit by Unger.
Waverly totaled 11 hits and two errors. MHS committed three errors.
The pitching win went to Landrum.
"Cierra settled in and found her pitches that were working (Tuesday). She finished the game strong," Haines said.
MHS will play again on Wednesday as they host the London Red Raiders in a South Central Ohio League matchup.
