Hillsboro sends 5 wrestlers to state championships

GOSHEN — The Hillsboro wrestling team flexed their muscles in the Division II Goshen District meet in the two-day event on Friday and Saturday, winning one individual district championship, placing five wrestlers in the Top Four and placing second overall as a team.
The Division II State Wrestling Championships will be a three-day event in Columbus at the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the campus of The Ohio State University starting on Thursday, March 1.
The district championship went to sophomore Kordell Ford, winning the 160-pound weight class, finishing a combined 4-0 in two days, earning a trip to the state championships.
Also stamping their ticket were Brandon Carter by placing third in the 106-Ib. class, Dillon Hunick by placing fourth in the 138-Ib. class, Kaleb West by placing third in the 145-Ib. class and Connor Johnston by placing fourth in the 170-Ib. class.
The district meet was won by the Washington Blue Lions, scoring 139 points, followed by Hillsboro with 119.5. New Richmond was third (116.5), followed by Ross in fourth (104) and in fifth was Miami Trace (98).
In total, three South Central Ohio League teams placed in the Top 5. Also from the SCOL, Clinton-Massie was 25th with 23 points and McClain was 27th with 20 points.
As for the district champion Ford, the sophomore finished 4-0 in two days, staring on Friday with a win via pin fall against Mark Allen of Gallia Academy at 1:11. Ford wrapped up the first day with a win via 12-5 decision against Ian Brown of Carroll.
In the semifinal round, Ford won via pin fall in 1:47 against Taylor's Brandon Strochinsky.
Ford won the district title with a 7-5 decision against Marietta's Justin Hasley.
Carter placed third at 106 with a two-day district record of 5-1. Carter opened the tournament with a pin fall win over Nate Closser of Bethel-Tate in 1:06. In the quarterfinal round, Carter lost by majority decision (13-0) to Bellbrook's Cameron Kelly, who eventually won the district title.
Following his quarterfinal loss, Carter bounced back with a pin fall win (0.53) against Chris Settles of New Lexington in the second consolation round. In the third consolation round, Carter defeated Zach Macella of Wilmington at the 1:56 mark. Carter won his fourth match of the event with a 3-2 decision win over Franklin's Forrest Brewer.
In the third-place match, Carter defeated Cory Parson (Warren) by pin fall in 0.59.
Also finishing in third place was West at 145 pounds, ending his two-day tournament at 4-1. In his first-round match, West won by technical fall over Mike Almond of Batavia at 17-2. West followed that with a quarterfinal win over Jacob Wright of Franklin via pin fall in 5:43. In the semifinal, West lost by a 6-5 overtime decision.
West rebounded in the consolation semifinal, winning via pin fall against Mikey Gonzalez of Wyoming H.S. in 4:53. West won his third-place match by defeating Jacob Wright via 10-6 decision.
Fourth-place finishers for the Indians were Hunick and Johnston.
Hunick, a sectional champion at Washington C.H., finished 4-2 in two days. In his first match of the districts, Hunick won by pin fall at 3:30 over Tyrell Grace of Hughes H.S. Hunick fell in the quarterfinal round by an 11-0 majority decision to Bellbrook's Benjamin Schram.
In the second consolation round, Hunick won via majority decision (13-4) over Logan Elm's D.J. White. In the third consolation round, Hunick won in OT at 3-1 against B.J. Garcia of Circleville.
Hunick continued his winning streak, defeating Drew Stebelton (Sheridan) by pin fall at 1:12. Hunick finished in fourth with an 8-6 overtime loss to Dallas Lazear (Athens) in the third-place match.
Johnston also placed in fourth in the 170-Ib. class. Johnston finished with a two-day mark of 3-2. Johnston opened his tournament with with 10-4 decision win over Kevin Reid of New Richmond. He followed that with a quarterfinal win, an 11-5 decision, over Tyler Claybaker of Eaton.
Johnston's first loss came in the semifinal round, by pinfall, to Brandon Taylor of Gallia Academy at 3:41. Johnston rallied back with a consolation semifinal win by decision (3-2) over James Pinson of Vinton County.
In the third-place match, Johnston fell by pin fall to Wyoming's Aluor Nyamor in 3:48.
Also wrestling in the event from Highland County were: Brandon Davis (McClain), Jake Branham (McClain), Lee Browning (Hillsboro), Gary Ryan (McClain), Drew Huffman (Hillsboro), Craig Jackson (Hillsboro), Stephen Limbacher (Hillsboro), D.J.
