Hillsboro, McClain compete in Day 1 of SCOL Championships

LONDON — Seven schools from the South Central Ohio League competed in the first day of the 2012 South Central Ohio League Track & Field Championships, with the Washington Lady Blue Lions leading the girls after three events were scored and the Hillsboro boys team leading following the first day of events.
With three events scored, the Washington girls lead with 32 points and the HHS boys lead with 35 points.
The final of the girls shot put, high jump and 4x800 relay were held, and for the boys, the 4x800, discus and pole vault finals were held.
In the girls final of the 4x800-meter relay, the London Lady Red Raiders won with a time of 10:13.27. The team consisted of Sarra Taylor, Sam Dencher, Marisa Davis and Jessica Stewart.
The HHS girls were second, taking and keeping the second spot in the third leg of the event. The HHS team finished with a time of 10:30.73 with the team of Hannah Opst, Bailey Patton, Alissa Hauke and Brittany Ferrell.
The remaining sports of the girls 4x800 included: Washington in third with a time of 10:39.90, followed by Clinton-Massie (11:19.77), Miami Trace (11:23.20) and McClain (13:05.33).
Washington's Logan Rowe was the SCOL champion of the girls high jump with a height of 5-03, as Rowe is the defending Division II champion in the high jump. Bayley Foell (CM) placed second with a jump of 5-00.00, and Tori Merrit was third for Washington at 5-00.00, and in fourth was Megan Frederick (CM) at 4-08.00. McClain's Abby Storts rounded out the top five in the event with a height of 4-08.00. Hillsboro's Taylor Stanforth was sixth at 4-06.00, and Leah Pence was ninth for HHS with a jump of 4-06.00.
The final event of the first day to complete was the girls shot put final with Washington's Jessica Guyett winning the league on a throw of 38-01.50, as Guyett was a state-placer in the event last year.
McClain's Tara Karnes placed second in the shot put with a throw of 33-09.50. Also for Highland County, Sidney Applegate (HHS) placed eighth out of 13 with a throw of 26-07.00, and Alyssa Sullivan (HHS) was ninth at 25-05.50.
As for the boys events, Washington's Riley Shaw won the discus championship with a throw of 139-10. McClain's Preston Wagner was sixth at 124-11. Chandler Wagner (MHS) was 10th at 109.04, and Hillsboro's Stanley Burns and Zach Brown finished 11th and 12th with throws of 105-06 and 93-07.
Highland County dominated the first three spots in the long jump event with Hillsboro's Jordan O'Connor winning the event championship with a leap of 20-01.75. McClain's Jordan Goble was second at 19-08.75, and James Morris (MHS) was third at 19-03.50. Hillsboro's Matt Fogle was seventh at 18-00.75.
The Indians also won the boys 4x800m relay with a time of 8:22.00. The team consisted of Michael Theobold, Collin Rothwell, Wyatt Gleadle and Jarrod Hart. London finished second in the event at 8:32.88, followed by Miami Trace (8:58.90), Washington (9:04.57) and McClain (9:09.99).
In the boys pole vault finals, the winner was Clinton-Massie's Zac Borton at 14-06.00, followed by Hillsboro's Thomas Wilkin at 11-06.00 in second place. HHS's Garrett Baldridge was fourth at 10-06.00 and McClain's Tommy Free was fifth at 10-00.00.
[[In-content Ad]]All the other events held were preliminary events, with the finals scheduled to take place on Thursday, May 10 at LHS. Listed are the top eight of the combined heats for each event run on Tuesday, as those eight will run in their respective final events.
Besides the 4x800m events, no other relay events were held, Tuesday. Thursday's field events will start at 4:30, with running events starting at 5 p.m.
