Hillsboro junior high wrestling team begin season with wins

The 2011-12 Hillsboro junior high wrestling team has started on a good note. They finished eighth in the New Richmond Invitational with 16 teams involved. Hillsboro had five medalists at New Richmond: 134-lb. Nathan Goolsby, third place; 142-lb. Jed Asmus, third place; 142-lb. Curran Butler, fourth place; 150-lb. Chase Willoughby, fourth place; and 160-lb. Chase Williamson, second place.

The Hillsboro junior high grapplers are 2-0 in dual meets, defeating Western Brown and Bethel-Tate. On Saturday, Dec. 10, they captured the team champion trophy at Batavia High School with 18 teams competing. Hillsboro trailed behind Western Brown and New Richmond all day until the final two rounds of the tournament. With 10 top-four place medalists, Hillsboro pulled in front, winning the tournament by the narrow margin of 2-1/2 points. Coach Brian Williamson and Greg Goolsby were thrilled with the outcome. Hillsboro had six finalists with two becoming champions: 142-lb. Jed Asmus and 160-lb. Chase Williamson. Coming in second place were 86-lb. Travis Wehrung and 134-lb. Nathan Goolsby. Third-place finishers were 98-lb. Ryan Hagan and 150-lb. Curran Butler, and 116-lb. Aaron Krewna and 104-lb. Jacob Schlater came in fourth.

"Everyone had a part in winning the tournament," the Hillsboro coaches said. "Everything fell in place."

The Hillsboro junior high wrestlers will have a small break before they take the mat again, wrestling a home meet along with the varsity against Washington C.H. and Greenfield McClain Thursday, Jan. 5 at 6 p.m. The Hillsboro varsity wrestlers will compete right after Christmas Dec. 27 and 28 at the West Jefferson Invitational.[[In-content Ad]]
