Hillsboro honors wrestling seniors; hosts final home match WATCH THE VIDEO

HILLSBORO — On the night where Hillsboro wrestling celebrated their four seniors, the Indians hosted their second and final home match of the season, against New Richmond and Wilmington, both non-league opponents.

Seniors honored in front of their home crowd included: Mason Hunick, Eric Short, Michael Short and William McClara.

Against Wilmington, the final of three matches on the night, the Indians lost by a team score of 44-21. Against New Richmond, HHS lost 39-21. In the opening match of the tri-match, New Richmond won 40-18 over Wilmington.

"We had too many injuries and too many holes to be competitive against those two schools," HHS head coach Nate Horne said. "Those are two really good schools."

In their first match of the night, HHS took on New Richmond, where the Indians won six individual matches. Winning against New Richmond were Eric Short (160), Michael Short (189), Ryan Kelley (103), Steven Limbacker (130), Hunick (140) and Kaleb West (140).

Eric Short wrestled in the first match for the Indians Thursday night, defeating Luke Hoskins by a major decision of 17-2, giving HHS five team points. In the first period, Short tallied eight points, six in the second period and three in the third. In the match, Short had four three-point near falls.

"Eric came out and had a good match his first match," Horne said. "He had a tougher second match. He wrestled a really good kid in his second match, but Eric hung in there and wrestled tough."

Michael Short won in the 189-pound match against Kyle Beckerich by a 10-3 decision. In the match, Short had a 2-0 advantage after the first period and led 6-2 headed into the third period. In the third period, Short tallied four more points for the win. Short had four takedowns in the match and one two-point near fall.

Kelley won his 103-pound match against Jordan Hooks, 13-8. Kelley trailed 4-3 after the first period, but rallied to tie the score at 6-6 in the second period. In the third, Kelley dominated with seven points, including two three-point near falls, plus one point for an escape.

"Ryan, he wrestled tough tonight," Horne said. "He's been wrestling 112 for us all year, so tonight, he finally got to wrestle his own weight class and did well."

In the 130-pound match, Limbacker defeated Sam Anderson, 4-2. Limbacker tallied four points in the first two periods on two takedowns.

Hunick was the next member of HHS to gain a win against New Richmond. The senior, who gained his 100th career win last week, gained win No. 101 with a 10-1 decision over Jacob Preston. Hunick led 2-0 after the first period with a two-point takedown, then added five points in the second period with a takedown and a three-point near fall. In the third period, Hunick scored on a escape and takedown.

"I thought Mason wrestled well," Horne said. "Mason wrestled tough, and it was a good senior night for him."

The final win against New Richmond came from West on a 15-5 decision over Autumn Clark. West led 4-0 after the first period on two takedowns. In the second period, West added seven points on two takedowns, a two-point near fall and one escape. In the third period, West had two takedowns.

In their second team match, the Indians took on the Wilmington Hurricane, which was the final team match of the evening.

HHS had four wins against the Hurricane as Kelley (103), Brandon Carter (112), Limbacher (130) and Hunick all won their matches.

Kelley was the first Hillsboro wrestler to win, giving HHS their first four points of the match. Kelley won via 12-3 decision over Zach Macella. Kelley had a near fall and take down in the first period for a 5-0 lead. In the second period, Kelley had seven points, including his second three-point near fall.

Carter gained a win via pin fall in the 112-pound match against Joan Tolliver. Carter dominated the first period with a score of 19-7 lead as he compiled eight takedowns and one three-point near fall. The pin fall came at the 3:28 mark of the match.

The second HHS pin fall win came from Limbacker at the 3:40 mark of the match against Wilmington's Mitchell Dooley in their 130-pound match. Limebacker had two take downs in the first period and was leading 9-1 before his pin fall.

"Steven did well and won two matches for us at 130," Horne said.

Hunick gained career win No. 102 with a 22-6 major decision over Sam Freese in their 135-pound match. Hunick led 4-2 after the first three-minute period, then took control with 11 points in the second period. In the second, he had two three-point near falls, one takedown and one escape. In the third period, Hunick had a three-point near fall and two takedowns.

One of the closer matches on the night was the 152-pound match with Hillsboro freshman Kordell Ford and Wilmington's Isaac Bray. The match went in favor of both wrestlers with Ford gaining a 2-1 advantage after the first period. Ford gained a 6-2 lead after the second period on a reversal and takedown. In the third period, Bray rallied with eight points in the final three minutes for the 10-9 win over Ford. Ford gained one point in the third on an escape, but Bray tallied eight points on two two-point near falls, one takedown and one reversal.
