HHS wins rivalry match with McClain

HILLSBORO — Unveiling their new red-and-white team uniforms for the first time Tuesday night, the Hillsboro Lady Indians left their home court Tuesday evening with a win, defeating cross-county rival McClain in three sets for their first South Central Ohio League win of the season.
HHS (1-2, 3-4) won the three sets by scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-19.
MHS (1-3, 2-5) kept the match close in all three sets, as the score was tied a total of 10 times.
"The girls improved on their passing (Tuesday)," Hillsboro coach Nichole Dickey said. "We had a lot of nice passes from Casey (Dunham) and Savanna Cameron.
"Both setters did well, and the girls stepped up their serving. When the girls decide they want to hustle and play like a team, we can get these results."
[[In-content Ad]]For the match, Cameron totaled 14 passes to setter.
In set one, MHS led 3-1, but Hillsboro's Autumn Hacker (14 passes, four kills, three aces) tied the set at 3-3, and later on, Hillsboro libero Casey Dunham broke the tie with an ace, as she totaled six aces. Dunham also totaled 28 passes to the setter.
With the scoreboard reading 4-3 in favor of HHS they eventually built a lead of 12-3, scoring 10 consecutive points with help from Hacker at the net and aces by Dunham.
MHS rallied to make it a 14-10 score as Kelcey Smith and out of play hits by HHS brought the score closer. Megan Overberg moved the HHS lead to five points in set one, but later with serves by Smith for MHS and other points by Hacker for HHS, the score eventually was tied at 18, 20 and 21.
After the score was tied at 21, HHS went on a four-point run and the set win with help from Cailin Wehrung (four kills), Hacker and Heather Tipton.
In the second set, MHS led 3-0, but eventually the score was tied at 5-5 and later 6-6 as the points were added with help from Hillsboro's Kristen Juillerat on a serve, Hacker at the net and an ace by Dunham. For MHS in that span, Lori Shonkwiler tied the score at six.
HHS took a 14-6 lead with eight consecutive points by Hacker, Tipton and Wehrung.
MHS brought the score to 16-12 with help from Shonkwiler and some out of play hits by HHS. The set concluded with a spike by Tipton.
Set three was tied four times at 1, 3, 4 and 5, but from there, HHS scored seven straight points for a lead of 11-5 and following one point by MHS tallied five more points in a row for a lead of 15-6.
Later on, HHS took a set three lead of 20-13 with a push over the net by Juillerat, and MHS made it 21-15 with a spike by Caitlyn Lovett. As the third set continued, Katy Unger scored consecutive points for MHS, but HHS rallied and won by a score of 25-19.
In JV play Hillsboro defeated McClain 25-11 and 25-14.
HHS will play again on Thursday as they travel to face Miami Trace. On Saturday, HHS will play in a tri-match against Eastern Brown and Blanchester at EBHS.
On Thursday MHS will host London.
