Grace Shope wins middle school state cross-country meet

Fairfield Junior High seventh-grader Grace Shope finished first at the 2012 sixth annual Ohio Cross-Country State Championships at Groveport Madison High School Oct. 21.

A total of 1,164 runners competed in the boys and girls events.

Shope completed the course in a time of 11:52.9, which was a 5:56 per mile pace. Shope was able to beat 126 runners with this time earning her a place at the top of the stand.  Shope's performance was extraordinary for a seventh grader, as it would have earned her fourth place in the Division I race.

Two weeks ago, Shope was the overall winner and first-place runner for Fairfield in the Southern Hills League meet with a time of 12:23.




[[In-content Ad]]In the boys' Division III race, the junior high team consisting of Wyatt Evans, Trent Tate, Klay Walker, Noah Richmond and Matthew Mangus tied for second place with Seneca East.  

The tie was broken with the sixth man's score, which put Leesburg in third place due to the fact that Leesburg only had 5 runners.  

Wyatt Evans earned a place on the stand and a medal for his 15th place of 116 runners with a finish time of 11:12.  

Following Evans was Trent Tate, 19th place at 11:31, Klay Walker, 33rd place at 11:56, Noah Richmond, 42nd place at 12:07 and Matthew Mangus 44th at 12:10.

Dakota Haines and Rylie McKinley were two of 69 runners in the Girls' Silver race. Haines placed 21st with a time of 13:42, and McKinley placed 58th with a time of 16:02.
