The Highland County Press -
On Friday, Jan. 7, the Greenfield Middle School wrestling team competed in the 2nd Annual East Clinton Duals.

The team entered the six-team round robin tournament with a 5-8 record.

The Tigers needed a big day to climb out of the sub .500 hole.

In round 1, GMS faced Williamsburg. This was a close battle that came down to the final match to determine the winner, with the final result being GMS 36, Williamsburg 34.

In the second round, GMS squared off with Dayton Stivers. Having wrestled against them at the Greeneview Duals before, the Tigers gained a 54-12 victory in their second meeting.

Round three brought GMS a loss, as the team from New Lebanon Dixie came out on top of a close 35-33 match. The Tigers needed to rebound in round four, as every team in the tournament now had at least one loss, and their next opponent in the next-to-last round was Zane Trace. The Tigers got back to their winning ways with a close 30-24 victory against ZT.

In the final round, the host team East Clinton was the opponent. This matchup also came to the final match, with Brendon Goble getting the pin to secure the Tiger victory, 48-36.

The Tigers went 4-1 on the day and tied for first place. Going 4-1 on the day gave the GMS grapplers a 9-9 record on the season. Dixie would take home the trophy, as they won the first tie-breaker criteria, which was head to head.

Individually, the Tigers had three wrestlers go 5-0 on the day, including Jake Badgley (104) highlighted by a great come-from-behind victory over Dixie's wrestler, Lucas Unger (150), and Brendon Goble (172), who pinned everyone he wrestled in the first period.

Ethan Paul (122) went 4-1. Tommy Wilson (98) was 3-0.  Thomas Blevins (116), Jimmy Unger (128), Gabe Smith (134), and Cameron Spangler (142) all went 3-2. Every wrestler had a winning record for the day.[[In-content Ad]]
