Girls Basketball: Hillsboro, McClain take part in SCOL Preview

EBER — The South Central Ohio League showcased their girls basketball programs Friday night, as all seven league teams, plus one from the Southern Buckeye Athletic and Academic Conference took part in one of the final preseason tune-ups at the Panther Pit in Miami Trace High School.
Teams playing in the 2011-12 SCOL preview were (home team listed second) Hillsboro Lady Indians vs. London Lady Red Raiders, Madison-Plains Lady Golden Eagles vs. McClain Lady Tigers, Clinton-Massie Lady Falcons vs. Washington Lady Blue Lions and East Clinton Lady Astros vs. Miami Trace Lady Panthers.
The Lady Panthers of MT are the eight-time defending SCOL champions as they have won every girls basketball championship since the league re-formed in 2003.
The preview event (each game was two quarters) opened with Hillsboro against London with the Lady Red Raiders defeating the Lady Indians 29-25. London led early at 11-0 to start the first quarter, but points from senior Carey Juillerat and junior Taylor Moberly made it a three-point game at 11-8. Alex Stratton made it a 13-10 game with two points.
One of the best moves of the game came with freshman Trista Rhodes as she switched hands while taking the ball to the hoop for a layup, bringing HHS within six points of LHS. HHS then cut the lead to four and again to four as they fell by the 29-25 score.
For Hillsboro, Moberly led with six points. She was followed by Rhodes with five and sophomore Whitlee Price with three points (all from free throws). Scoring two points each were sophomore Madison Colliver, senior Danielle Gillman, freshman Kaylynn Bell, sophomore Britney Bowen and Stratton. Junior Taylor Stanforth sank one free throw as a total of nine Lady Indians scored points.
London was led by senior Kayla Crager with 10 points. Sophomore Aliyah Hiram and senior Kyra Cunningham each scored four points for LHS. Senior Alicia Hiram followed with three points and freshman Katelyn Ray, sophomore Mia Zawondy, freshman Aianna Wilson and sophomore Makayla Juergen each scored two points as a total of eight Lady Red Raiders scored points.
LHS was 13-of-20 from the free-throw line, and HHS was 11-of-22. Each team had 10 fouls.

The second game consisted of Madison-Plains against McClain, where the Lady Tigers won by a score of 27-23 in two quarters.
In their scrimmage, MHS took a 7-3 lead early in the first with points from senior Taylor Faulconer and senior Sammy Rooks, including a fast-break layup by Rooks for the four-point lead. MP came back to take an 8-7 lead, but McClain answered with points for a 9-8 lead. Sophomore Tara Karnes put MHS ahead 12-8 with put-back points in the paint. After the first quarter, the Lady Tigers led 18-12.
In the second quarter MP got within one point of taking a late lead at 24-23, but MHS pulled away for the four-point win.
Karnes led MHS with eight points, followed by senior Brittany Mullikin and Rooks with six points each. Senior Kaitlyn Faulconer scored three points, and senior Jenna Perie added two. Taylor Faulconer and senior Kate Crabtree each added a free throw to the overall total.
From the free-throw line, MHS was 6-of-13.
For MP, senior Ashley Butts led with eight points, followed by sophomore Hayley Faulkner with six. Junior Casey Knisley and freshman Logan Haddox each scored four points, and junior Kelsey Woodyard sank a free throw.
MP was 3-of-5 from the free-throw line.

The third matchup was Clinton-Massie vs. Washington where the Lady Blue Lions won by a score of 22-19. The Lady Falcons have no seniors on this year's roster.
Washington had four players score their points with junior Molli Shaw leading with eight points. She made two 3-pointers.
Senior Jessica Guyett followed with seven points, and senior Maggie McDonald (one 3-pointer) had five points. Junior Adrianne Perriell scored two points for Washington.
From the charity stripe, Washington was 3-of-6.
For the Lady Falcons sophomore Sydney Brackemyre led with six points, followed by junior Mary Moyer with four points. Sophomore Kasey Uetrecht added three points; while junior Hannah Smith, sophomore Brittni Holman and sophomore Logan Frederick all scored two points apiece.
From the free-throw line, CM was 4-of-6.

The final game of the night saw host Miami Trace defeat East Clinton (who will be a full-time member of the SCOL in the 2012-13 season) 20-7 in two quarters.
Leading MT was junior Deidre McKay with six points. She was followed by senior Kristen Reisinger with four points and sophomore Abby Schwenk with three points.
Scoring two points each for MT were senior Jordan Bonham, senior Tiarra Perkins and sophomore Kelsey Wilson. Sophomore Josie Cobb added a free throw.
Scoring for EC were junior Jessica Bond with five points and senior Jordanne Finley with two points.
