The Hillsboro Indians wrestling team continued their run of success this season as they had two wrestlers place first and the team earned the third-place spot at the Bellbrook Invitational this past weekend.
Earning the first-place spots were 2012 state qualifiers Kordell Ford at 152 pounds and Connor Johnston at 162 pounds as the Indians scored 154 points in their third-place finish. Winning the event was Ryle with 199 points, and in second was Athens at 166.
Finishing in the runner-up spots were Ryan Kelley at 113 pounds, Drew Huffman at 182 and Skylar Murphy at 220.
Brandon Carter was third place in the 106-pound weight class, as was Craig Jackson at 138. In fourth were Toby Warrington (113), Cody Whaley (126) and Darian Schumacker (170).
As for Ford and Johnston, they won their first-place matches as Ford won his 152-pound final match with a 10-6 decision over Benjamin Schram of Bellbrook.
Johnston won by a 9-7 decision over Troy Stalder of Athens.
In the semifinals, Ford pinned Damian Boldman of Triad at 5:35, and Johnston won by a 10-3 decision over Chris McEvoy of Wilmington.
In the quarterfinals, Ford won by majority decision (12-3) over Kenon Bowling (Western Brown). Johnston won his quarterfinal match over Shane Courtney of Dixie Heights via pin fall at 3:29.
Kelley went 2-1 in the event for his second-place finish. Kelley opened the event with a quarterfinal pin fall win (.34) over Dylon Geotz of Dixie Heights at 120 pounds. In the semifinals, Kelley defeated Emmett Covington (Athens) by technical fall (17-1). In the finals, Kelley lost by a 15-9 decision to Gus Adams of Ryle.
Huffman's path to his second-place finish began with a quarterfinal win via pin fall (.21) over Joe Troehler of Bellbrook. In the semifinals, Huffman defeated Rickey Bruce (Triad), 11-7, and in the 182-pound final, Huffman was defeated by Wilmington's Evan Hickey by an 8-2 decision.[[In-content Ad]]
Murphy lost in the final of the 220-pound weight class by pin fall (3:02) to Ryle's Jason Maine. Murphy won twice in the event with a semifinal win over Jed DeBruin (Athens) by an 8-5 decision. In the quarterfinals, Murphy defeated Devon Gevedon (Fairborn) by pin fall at 3:45.
Carter (106) won his third-place match by defeating Jacob Boldman (Wilmington), 13-4, while Jackson (138) also won his third-place match over Hunter St. Peter of Athens by an 8-3 decision.
Warrington (113) was fourth with a third-place match loss to Zach Bussard by a 3-2 score. Whaley (126) was also fourth with a third-place match loss to Zane Brady of Valley View via majority decision (13-1). Schumacker (170) lost his third-place match to Rocco Baker of Oakwood, 4-3.
In the 106-pound consolation semifinal, Carter pinned Nick Weaver (Bellbrook) at the .32 mark. Warrington also won his consolation semifinal match, defeating Cortez Gainey (Athens) by an 8-4 decision. Whaley (126) won by a 4-2 decision over Colin Stevens (Turpin) in their consolation semifinal match.
Jackson (138) wrestled his way to a consolation semifinal win over Aaron Munoz (Dixie Heights) via majority decision, 14-6.
Schumacker won his consolation semifinal match with a 10-1 majority decision over Phillip Gantt of Madison.
In the semifinals, Carter lost by majority decision (10-2) to Joey Skaggs (Dixie Heights). At 138 (in the semifinals), Jackson lost to Zach Johnson, 4-3.
Trey Burns (195) lost in the consolation semifinal to Brian Morris (Madison) at 6-4. In the second consolation, Burns advanced with a bye, as did Warrington at 113 and Whaley at 126.
At 285, Jesse Hale lost in the second consolation by pin at 2:59 to Kevin Phelps. At 145, Curran Butler lost by pin fall (2:00) to Dustin Bramble in the first consolation round.
In the quarterfinal round, Carter won by tech. fall over Brett Osbourne (Ryle) at 17-2. Warrington lost at 113 in the quarterfinals by a 4-2 score to Zach Bussard of Valley View. Also in the quarterfinals, Whaley lost to Jacob Erdman by majority decision. At 138, Jackson won by pin fall over Bradley Tran of Bellbrook at 4:55. Butler lost in the 145-pound quarterfinal match to Wyatt DeWeese (Wilmington) by pin at 4:41.
