Ford continues, Carter eliminated on Day 2 of OHSAA State Wrestling Championships

COLUMBUS — On the second day of the 75th annual 2012 OHSAA State Wrestling Championships, Hillsboro junior Kordell Ford won his second consolation bracket match, while junior Brandon Carter was eliminated from the tournament.
Ford, on Friday, defeated Dominic Scarberry, 2-1 in the second consolation bracket match. Thus far in the state tournament, Ford is 2-1.
With the win, Ford has guaranteed himself no less than eighth place in the state tournament, which also guarantees a spot at the podium on Saturday.
Ford will wrestle again later Friday evening against Newark Licking Valley senior Jake Lagace (48-7) in the consolation bracket quarterfinals. Lagace defeated Justin Hasley and Michael Burge in the first two consolation bracket rounds. If Ford wins Friday evening, he'll advance to the consolation bracket semifinals on Saturday at 10 a.m.; if he loses Friday evening, he'll wrestle in the seventh-place match on Saturday around 11 a.m.
For the season, Ford is 42-4, winning the South Central Ohio League 160-pound championship, placing second in the Washington C.H. Division II SE District Sectional tournament and winning the Division II Goshen SE District tournament.
Hillsboro junior Brandon Carter was eliminated on the second day of the state wrestling championships, falling to Steubenville freshman Devin Brown via majority decision 18-6 in the second round of the consolation bracket at 106 pounds. Brown improves to 39-9 on the season.
Carter finishes his junior year at 35-6, going 1-2 in the state tournament. This season, Carter won the SCOL 106-pound championship, placed second in the Washington C.H. Division II SE District Sectional tournament and placed third in the Division II Goshen District tournament.
In his first match of the state tournament on Thursday, in the preliminary round, Carter lost to junior Jude Michel of Milan Edison. In that opening match, Carter trailed 6-2 after the first round, and as the final seconds ticked away, Carter's left shoulder was injured. Following medical assistance once the first round ended, Carter was pinned with 57 seconds left on the second-round clock at 3:03.
In his second match of the tournament, Carter (the first round of the consolation bracket) defeated Collin Dees (39-9) of Perry, 6-5.
[[In-content Ad]]As for Ford's first three matches of the state tournament, on the first day of the state tournament on Thursday, Ford went 1-1, winning in the first consolation match, defeating junior Jared Chambers (30-13) of Oak Harbor, 9-7.
"Kordell didn't have his best match in the first round, but that happens," Horne said on Thursday. "He showed grit in his second match, and we knew his second match was going to be a tough one. Kordell could have closed up shop and went home, but he gutted it out, and he got a win."
In the highly competitive match, Ford went up 2-0 after the first period, followed by a 6-3 lead after the second period. The match got closer in the third period with Chambers maneuvering his way to within one point of tying the score at 6-5, but Ford regrouped and made it a 9-7 score for the win.
Ford lost a heartbreaker in his preliminary match, as he led his 160-pound match against Chagrin Falls senior Ricky Kochert, 8-1 with 58 seconds left on the clock in the second round.
As the time ticked off the clock, Ford was slowly wrestled onto his back, where Kochert gained a pin fall win at 3:59, gaining the pin fall with one second left before the second round ended.
In all, Hillsboro sent five wrestlers to the state championships with sophomore Dillon Hunick, junior Conner Johnston and senior Kaleb West going 0-2 on day one.
This state trip as a whole helps the Indians, not only for the remainder of this year, but next year as well.
"This is huge psychology to know they've overcome that step that they are no longer looking to be a state qualifier," Horne said. "They know what it is like; now they are looking to be a state placer.
"It make a tremendous difference for kids who have already been here the second time around. It's huge for their motivation and huge for their experience."
