MT. STERLING — It took four more innings than usual, but the McClain Lady Tigers took home a South Central Ohio League win Monday evening, defeating the Madison-Plains Lady Golden Eagles, 6-5 at MPHS.
McClain (7-0, 13-2) led 5-3 headed into the seventh inning but allowed two runs, as MP forced extra innings, but that was OK as MHS was able to keep their perfect mark in the SCOL intact, as they eventually scored the game-winning run in the 11th inning.
"The girls battled, kept competing, and I'm proud they earned this win," MHS head coach Jarrod Haines said. "When they (MP) tied the score, we did what we had to do and got the job done."
That inning began with Alli Willett doubling to lead off the inning. Willett moved to third on a bunt by Cierra Landrum, and she scored on a two-out double to centerfield by Jenna Perie.
Perie led MHS at 3-for-4.
The first five McClain runs came with a three-run second and one run in each of the next two innings.
MP scored their first three runs in the third, along with the aforementioned two runs in the seventh.
[[In-content Ad]]In the circle, Landrum pitched all 11 innings for the Lady Tigers, allowing nine hits and striking out six. Landrum didn't allow a single hit in the eighth, ninth or 10th innings.
"During extra innings, Cierra pitched really strong," Haines said.
At the plate for MHS, Landrum had two hits and one RBI, and Shania Massie had one hit and one RBI. Emily Sterling totaled two hits and one RBI.
Also for MHS, Brittany Mullikin had one hit, and Sasha Lawwell finished with two doubles and two RBIs.
One defensive play Haines said stood out and changed the game was in the sixth inning with a relay play from Massie in the outfield to Kate Crabtree at shortstop, who threw it to home to Perie for the out at the plate, saving a run.
MHS will play again on Tuesday as they travel to Chillicothe to face Northwest High School at VA Memorial Stadium.
