Conference title opportunity slips out of reach for LC

PEEBLES — With an opportunity to win a Southern Hills Athletic League Division I championship, the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs trailed too much, too early. The result of that was they were defeated by the Peebles Lady Indians, as the visiting Lady Mustangs fell by a score of 42-34.
LC finishes in second place in the SHAC with a conference mark of 9-4, as the North Adams Lady Green Devils defeated West Union Thursday, 67-17 to secure sole possession of the Division I crown with a conference record of 10-3.
The Lady Mustangs stand at 16-5 overall.
The first half wasn't kind to LC, as they trailed 17-6 in the first quarter and 29-13 at the half.[[In-content Ad]]
LC was held to single-digit scoring in three of four quarters.
The Lady Mustangs rallied in the third with a 16-6 quarter, but scoring just five points in the final eight minutes while allowing just seven didn't help the cause of LC at PHS.
"We came back strong in the second half, but we can't spot a good team an 11-point lead in the beginning," coach Whitney Lewis said. "This one is tough."
LC had six players score points. Leading was Ali Little with 12 points, seven rebounds, three steals and one assist. She was 1-of-2 from the free-throw line.
Also scoring for LC were Morgan Fittro with two points, Madysyn Creighton with two, Laney Lewis with seven, Shelby Stewart with five and Emma Setty with six.
LC totaled 26 rebounds, six assists, 10 steals and 15 fouls, while committing 21 turnovers. LC shot 33 percent from the field overall.
The Lady Mustangs play again on Saturday afternoon when they will make up a game at Fairfield, as they face the Lady Lions.
