Clinton-Massie too much for Lady Indians

HILLSBORO — The first quarter was even on the scoreboard, but eventually the height and physicality of the Clinton-Massie Falcons were too much for the Hillsboro Lady Indians to overcome as they were defeated by the visiting Lady Falcons, 57-34 Saturday afternoon.
The first frame was the closest in terms of scoring as the Lady Indians gave the first-place Lady Falcons, who are playing the remainder of the season without standout Sydney Brackmyre due to a leg injury, a scare, as the opening frame ended with a 14-14 tied score.
From there, though, the Lady Falcons showed why they continue to stay defeated in the South Central Ohio League as they outscored the host Lady Indians, 43-20 for the next three quarters.
The win moves the SCOL-leading Lady Falcons to 12-2 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the league. HHS falls to 1-7 in the SCOL and 4-10 overall.
"We started off well in the first quarter," HHS head coach JR Moberly said. "We executed our game plan, but they (CM) were bigger, stronger and faster … and their physicality was tough to match.
"We had to win a battle of the boards, and we missed box outs and stick backs, so that was key. We had the lead but kept them in the game."
In the first quarter, it was Hillsboro who took the first lead of the game with Madison Snyder making it a 2-0 score with 6:49 on the clock. That was followed with a 3-pointer by Kaylynn Bell, and with 5:46 left in the first, a jumper from Trista Rhodes to put HHS ahead 7-5.
Rhodes led HHS with 17 points, followed by Bell with seven points and Snyder with five.[[In-content Ad]]
"Trista shot the ball well, and Madison did some nice things, too," Moberly said.
Following one free throw by Clinton-Massie's Allyson Monnin, the Lady Indians had eight straight points by Rhodes with a 3-pointer, a three-point play following a steal and a layup with a bounce pass to the paint by Bell for an HHS lead of 13-6 with 2:41 remaining in the opening frame.
The Lady Falcons answered with a 8-1 run in the final 2:31 of the first with points by Erin Fair, Brittany Smith, who scored 12 total points, and Mary Moyer with Fair tying the score at 14 with a layup at the buzzer.
In the second frame, the Lady Falcons broke away by outscoring HHS, 17-6 as they took an 11-point halftime lead at 31-20.
CM began the second with four straight points, with two from Smith and two free throws by Kasey Uetrecht for a 19-14 advantage. HHS countered with a jumper from Faith Middleton (who finished with four points), though CM added four more points from Uetrecht for a 27-18 advantage.
Uetrecht led all scorers with 20 points.
Including the two layups from Uetrecht, the Lady Falcons went on an 8-2 run in the final 3:22 of the first half for a halftime lead of 31-20.
In the third, CM took overall control of the game with a 14-8 run and in the fourth finished by outscoring HHS, 12-6. Scoring points in the third for HHS was Rhodes with six and Bell with two. In the fourth, Rhodes made a 3-pointer, while Bell and Kristen Juillerat made shots from the free-throw line.
In JV play, CM defeated HHS, 35-19. Sidney Avery led CM with 12 points, while HHS was led by Juillerat with nine points.
HHS will play again on Wednesday, Jan. 16 when they host Whiteoak in non-league play.
