The Cincinnati Reds are back in the postseason for consecutive seasons by defeating the New York Mets, 3-2 in 10 innings, Monday.

The Reds were locked into the postseason as they won Monday, along with the Pittsburgh Pirates when the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Washington Nationals, knocking them out of postseason contention, with a 4-3 win.

[[In-content Ad]]The NL Central will have the Reds, Cardinals and the Pirates all in the postseason, with one team being the division champions, while the other two teams will play in the Wild Card play-in game.

St. Louis' magic number to clinch the Central is four. The Reds and Pirates trail the Cardinals in the division by two games, as both teams are 90-67 overall. The Cardinals are 92-65.

The Cardinals have two games remaining with the Nationals and will end the regular season with the Chicago Cubs (three games) at home.

Cincinnati has two games left with the Mets at Great American Ball Park, then will host the Pirates for a three-game series starting Friday at GABP. Those games could have the division title at stake or at least home field advantage for the Wild Card game on the line, depending on results on Tuesday and Wednesday by all three Central postseason teams.

The Pirates have two games with the Cubs left on Tuesday and Wednesday, before their series with the Reds.

This is the first time the Reds have made the postseason in consecutive years since the Big Red Machine teams of 1975-76. The Reds won the NL Central title in 2012 and 2010. They missed the postseason in '11. They've last won a postseason series in 1995 against the L.A. Dodgers.

Last season the Reds lost in the NLDS in five games to the San Francisco Giants.
