Chamblin kicks Tigers into tie with Mustangs

GREENFIELD — From 30 yards out, McClain's Ben Chamblin kicked the ball as far as he could toward the net, as the Tigers trailed by one goal with the final seconds ticking off the clock. His kick sent the ball sailing, hanging in the air, until it landed in the back of the Lynchburg-Clay goal with 5.5 left on the clock, giving the Highland County counterparts a 3-3 tie to end the match.
With high school soccer not having an overtime or shootout period, the physical matchup underneath a full moon Wednesday evening at McClain Field was left to a "what if" moment, if there was such a thing a regular-season overtime.
"We were just trying to fight back into the game in the last 10 minutes … we would have rather had a win, but a tie is better than a loss," MHS head coach Jon Chamblin said. "I'm proud of the boys in their ability to come back.
"This is a confidence builder for the kids. I'm hoping we take this motivation into our next game, but injuries are really hurting us right now."
The motivation that Coach Chamblin spoke about occurred in the second half, but it didn't come until later in the half as the Mustangs (1-1-1) tied the match at 1-1 in the early stages of the second half, then took a commanding 3-1 advantage.
LC tied the score at 1-1 when Gage Waits scored on a header at the 31:47 mark off a rebound. That goal, which tied the match, equaled a goal in the opening half by the Tigers (1-2-1), who had a 1-0 lead at halftime when Reid Garrison scored with 12:19 remaining in the first half on a short kick near the goal.

The Mustangs took a two-goal lead when Waits added his second goal with 30:05 left in the match, as he knocked the ball in from around five yards away.
LC again increased their lead to two goals when Devin Pierson scored a goal with 22:09 left in regulation.
All seemed well for LC, but their defense didn't hold up, and their offense went scoreless for the remainder of what turned into an extremely physical matchup as Nic Rivas brought MHS closer to the lead with a goal close to the right side of the net with 10:11 left on the clock.
The final goal was the aforementioned 30 yards by Chamblin with 5.5 left in regulation.
"We stopped playing defense in the final 10 seconds," LC head coach Dennis West said. "We got overconfident, and it cost us the win. If nothing else, we'll learn from this."
Another standout for MHS was keeper Tyler McGuire, who totaled 15 saves.
"Tyler is really improving, and I'm proud of his play in this game," Chamblin said.
MHS will play again on Thursday as they host SCOL foe and Highland County rival Hillsboro.
