Challenge Achieved: Lady Tigers defend home field in victory

GREENFIELD — The '12 McClain Lady Tigers are looking at this season as a "Season of Challenges." If that's the case, on Thursday at McClain Field, they accepted and achieved the challenge as they held off the Madison-Plain Lady Golden Eagles for a 2-1 victory.
"This is our 'Season of Challenges,'" MHS head coach Luis J. Rivas said. "It was good to have 11 players on the field together for the first time. We knew Madison-Plains was like us having low numbers, but both teams played very hard.
"It was good to get a win early on this year, and I am proud of how the girls played with effort and passion. We just have to continue to get stronger each time we play."
The Lady Tigers (1-1) not only rebounded from a big loss on Tuesday against London, but finally got to play with a full lineup on the field for the first time this season (including scrimmages) as they played just 11 players, with no reserves, for a majority of the game. The only time they didn't have 11 on the field was when a player left the field due to an injury and they played with 10 players.

None of that mattered to McClain as all the goals scored in the match came in the first half as Megan Mustard put MHS ahead 2-0 with 16:44 left in the opening 40 minutes of play.
Her first goal at the 26:37 mark was scored from nearly 15 yards away with the assist going to Cynthia Wardlow.
The score went to a two-goal lead when Mustard kicked the ball into the left corner of the goal with the assist credited to Lauren Starkey at the aforementioned 16:44 mark of the opening half.
MP made it a one-goal match with Toria Laumann putting the ball into the back of the net with 8:40 on the first-half clock.
In the second half, the Lady Golden Eagles challenged the Lady Tigers, but a stop in front of the goal by Samy Rowe kept the MHS lead intact.
The Lady Tigers will play again on Wednesday, Aug. 29 as they will host the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs in a non-league game at McClain Field at 5 p.m.
