GREENFIELD — You can't teach speed, and for the Chillicothe Cavaliers, they used their overall team speed to pace the second half and eventually a South Central Ohio League loss for the McClain Tigers.
As for the Tigers (0-2, 1-3), they lost by a score of 42-27, but in the first half kept the score really close. The second half was a different story with Chillicothe (2-1, 2-2) forcing turnovers and pacing the game with their speed on fast break opportunities at McClain Gym.
"Chillicothe is a talented team," MHS head coach Joe Wisecup said. "They are really good defensively. We at times didn't have the good defensive stop in the second half."
In the loss, the Tigers had no players reach double figures as they had trouble shooting from the field. It was Randall Mischal who led the host Tigers in scoring with nine points. Bryce Duff and Travis Hall each followed with five points.
"A lot of how we played offensively is attributed to the defense of Chillicothe," Wisecup said. "We don't have any one-on-one players who can create their own shot. They (CHS) did a pretty good job of taking things away from us."
This game also didn't have the leading scorers on each team from last season with McClain's Ryan Faulconer and Chillicothe's Tommy Bolte both out with various injuries.
"With Ryan out, it affects what groups of players we have out there, but hopefully we'll get to where we want to be," Wisecup said. "I also thought we got outworked at times. There were some stretches where they were getting to the loose balls before we were.
"Sometimes that's athletic ability, and some of it is desire."
About that first half of the Tigers … they trailed by six points after eight minutes at 12-6, but it was Mischal who was first to score points in the game with a layup at the 6:25 mark of the opening quarter.
That was the only time the Tigers held the lead in the SCOL contest.
Those two points were answered with a 3-pointer by Quintin Davidson at the 5:45 mark of the first, and from there, the Cavs never lost the lead. Davidson followed that up with two free throws for a 5-2 advantage.
Davidson led all scorers with a game-high 19 points.
With the Tigers trailing by six points at the start of the second quarter, MHS ended up outscoring CHS, 5-4 in the second with both teams combining for just nine points in eight minutes.

Chillicothe, who are coached by former McClain standout Eric Huffer, began to change the pace of the game in the third, outscoring MHS, 15-9 in the quarter, due in large part to Nate Rosenbauer scoring nine points in the frame, including a 3-pointer with 3:55 on the clock for a then 25-18 CHS lead. Rosenbauer finished with 14 points.
For MHS in the third, Bryce Duff sank a 3-pointer, and with 2:49 left in the quarter, Mischal cut the Cavs' lead to nine points with an unguarded layup underneath the basket. Those points cut the Cavs' lead to 29-20.
In the fourth, CHS outscored MHS, 11-7 to keep a hold of the win.
From the free-throw line Friday, the Cavaliers were 8-of-17 and McClain was 4-of-6.
In JV play, McClain lost to CHS, 25-22. Leading MHS was Mat Barton with 11 points and Owen O'Connor with six. CHS was led by Sam Taylor and Seth Barnes with eight points each.
The freshman game saw MHS defeat the Cavs, 30-20. MHS was led by Landree Gray with 13 points.
