Defense and the ground game led the '13 Paint Valley Bearcats to a 45-0 season-opening win Friday night over the Lockland Panthers at George Knisley Field in Bainbridge.

The Bearcats controlled all aspects of their offense with their rushing attack, as they totaled 391 yards on 30 rushes. Leading the 'Cats was senior Mark Clifford with 11 rushes for 191 yards and one touchdown. Teagan McFadden finished with nine carries for 139 yards and three touchdowns rushing and four TDs overall.

The PV defense was just as good as their offense, holding LHS to -7 total offensive yards, including -59 yards of rushing.

"All 53 players played in the game, and we ran a second team offense the final three possessions of the second quarter," PV head coach Pete Hollon said. "I was pleased to play all our players, and our front seven controlled the tempo on both sides of the ball."

A big part of the 300-plus rushing yards can be credited to the play of the offensive line and tight ends, including Austin Baker, Dakota Morgan, Clay Archer, Gavin Carter, DeShawn Davis, Josh Krech, Cody Draise and Caleb Johnson.

"Those guys took it upon themselves to create a new line of scrimmage each play," Hollon said. "We didn't have a loss of yardage on offense all night, and that's a credit to our o-line and tight ends.

"I was also impressed with the blocking of the running backs. They blocked for each other, and that's a good thing to see. Mark and Teagan ran the ball well, but as a coach, I was pleased with their blocking. They did the little things for their teammates."

In the first quarter against LHS, it was all McFadden, both Teagan and Anthony. Teagan began the scoring with a 35-yard TD run and followed that with a 23-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown for a 12-0 lead. After both TDs, the Bearcats failed to convert their PATs.[[In-content Ad]]
Still in the first, Anthony McFadden took the ball 34 yards to pay dirt on a quarterback keeper, and Teagan wrapped up first-quarter scoring with a 15-yard rush to the end zone. Tony Hatfield ran the ball for a two-point conversion for a 26-0 PV lead.

"Anthony stepped up in the huddle and led the team," Hollon said.

In the second, Teagan McFadden scores his fourth TD of the game with a 31-yard rush. Clifford's PAT made it a 33-point lead. Cifford followed with a 34-yard TD run for the 39-0 halftime lead.

PV had one final TD, coming in the third with a fumble recovery in the end zone by Davis.

As for defense, Clifford and Johnson led the Bearcats with nine tackles apiece with Clifford also garnering a sack. Nate Yoakum totaled two sacks and six tackles, while Dylan Estep had five tackles, a fumble recovery and a interception. Chris Fellenstein also had an interception.

"Defensively, the team was outstanding," Hollon said. "Our motto for the game was 'make their speed go east to west and not north to south.' The defensive play of Dominic Salomone, Dalton Waugh and Mason McCloy played extremely well."

Next for the Bearcats will be an away game at Williamsburg. WHS (0-1) was defeated by Reading, 41-22.
