Bearcats open season with rout of Belpre

Until the Paint Valley starting defense was lifted from the game in the third quarter, they held the Belpre Golden Eagles to negative-58 yards. That defensive effort, mixed with their offensive outburst, turned into a 54-14 rout Friday night in their season opener.
The Bearcats (1-0) scored all 54 points in the first three quarters, starting the first frame with 21 points, including a touchdown within the first couple minutes of the season when freshman Teagan McFadden (46 total yards rushing) scored by taking the ball one yard following a blocked punt by the Bearcats. Sophomore Mark Clifford converted his first of six extra-point kicks to make it a 7-0 lead.
"To start the season with a three-and-out and to block the punt and get a touchdown two minutes into the season is a huge confidence boost for our kids," Paint Valley head coach Pete Hollon said. "Defensively, our defense dominated and played well."
That score was followed by first-quarter touchdowns with senior Kyle Kottenbrook scoring on a three-yard run and Clifford scoring on a seven-yard run for 21 first-quarter points.
For the game, Kottenbrook led PV with 116 yards rushing on 12 carries. Clifford rushed 10 times for 74 yards.

Kottenbrook scored two more times (his second and third touchdowns) in the second quarter with two 11-yard touchdown runs, and McFadden scored the sixth PV touchdown on a run of 12 yards.
The final two touchdowns came in the third quarter with Clifford returning an interception 21 yards and freshman Tony Hatfield taking the ball on a 14-yard run to the end zone. Hatfield totaled 71 yards on seven carries through three quarters.
In his first start at quarterback in a varsity game, Anthony McFadden was 4-for-6 for 104 yards passing.
"To have our freshman players play so well in their first game … as a coaching staff, we are ecstatic," Hollon said.
With all the offense, the defensive output was just as dominant as PV's defense allowed a net total of 38 yards, as the starting defensive unit held Belpre (0-1) to -58 yards when they were replaced on the field.
As a team PV totaled six sacks from Clifford, junior Nate Yoakum, senior Quentin Tesi, senior Riley Markko and junior Dakota Morgan. Tesi and Markko led the Bearcats in tackles with seven each, followed by Yoakum with six. PV also had two blocked punts.
The Bearcats open their home slate on Friday, Aug. 31 in a non-league game against Williamsburg at 7:30 p.m.
