Bearcats fall to Piketon

The Paint Valley Bearcats were unable to stop the Piketon offense, and that, along with the Redstreaks' ability to take advantage of PV miscues, led to a Bearcat defeat of 48-33 Friday night at PVHS.
The loss puts the Bearcats at 2-3 in the Scioto Valley Conference with an overall record of 4-3-1. Piketon improved to 4-1 in league play and 6-2 overall.
The Redstreaks totaled 415 yards of offense.
"We didn't have the start we wanted," PV head coach Pete Hollon said. "In the third quarter, you can say we lost all the wind in our sails. We had our chances early to tie the score, but we didn't.
"They (Piketon) scored 21 points off our turnovers, and against a team like them, you can't let that happen. Piketon was the better team."
Piketon led 14-6 after the first quarter with the PV points coming on a 48-yard run by Mark Clifford, then making the score 7-6 in favor of Piketon after the PAT was blocked.
At the half, Piketon led 27-12 with the PV points coming on a 15-yard TD catch by Quentin Tesi off a pass by Anthony McFadden. The 2-point conversion failed for a then lead of 14-12 by Piketon.
As for the Redstreaks' second quarter … they scored a touchdown and then held the Bearcats on a fourth-and-2 on the 6-yard line. From there, the Redstreaks scored on a long play for the halftime lead of 27-12.

"I can say Piketon was the first team to control us up front," Hollon said. "We couldn't get to their quarterbackk, and he made some fantastic plays.
"They exposed our youth, but our kids played hard … I can't fault our effort, but Piketon just hurt us up front, in the trenches."
Then, in the third, any momentum the Bearcats had went away as they lost a fumble (just for the second time this season) as Piketon went on a 14-0 tear in the quarter for a lead of 41-12.
In the fourth, PV outscored Piketon 21-7.
In the fourth, Clifford had a 14-yard TD run, Teagan McFadden also scored on a 14-yard run and Tony Hatfield raced 107 yards on a fumble recovery with a PAT by Caleb Johnson.
Clifford finished with 11 carries for 91 yards as PV's leading rusher Kyle Kottenbrook is currently injured and did not play in the game. Anthony McFadden totaled 103 yards passing (5-of-9) with one TD and one interception.
For the game, PV totaled 254 yards of offense.
"This was just a big learning experience for our players," Hollon said. "It was the first time most of the kids played in a game this big or important, and it will make us better in the long run.
"Also, not having Kyle (Kottenbrook) hurts. He's our leading rusher, and he was having a great year so far. Helping him get healthy is the most important thing."
PV will face Huntington this Friday.
