Bearcats' D dominates Southeastern

For the third time this season, the Paint Valley Bearcats left the football field with a win as their defense led the way and the offense gained the points for a 34-16 Scioto Valley Conference win over the Southeastern Panthers Friday night at SEHS.
The defense of PV (1-1, 3-1-1) kept the Panthers' score low, holding SE to -12 yards total offensive yards. Also on the defensive side, Logan McGraw blocked a punt and Nate Yoakum recovered a fumble.
"We're really thrilled defensively," Paint Valley head coach Pete Hollon said. "I've repeated over and over, we're not that big, so we'll use our speed. Our philosophy is we may give up a play here or there, but we'll get more than we give up.
"Speed on defense is key for us."
PV's offense totaled 388 rushing yards and 439 total yards.
All of that said, the visiting Bearcats trailed 7-6 after the first quarter with PV's TD coming on a 15-yard run by junior Mark Clifford. Clifford finished with 107 yards rushing on 11 carries.
The Bearcats outscored SE 21-3 in the second quarter with Kyle Kottenbrook scoring on a 2-yard run. Kottenbrook led all rushers with 21 carries and 165 yards.
That TD was followed by a 54-yard run by Clifford and another 15-yard run for a TD by the junior for the 28-10 halftime lead.
In the second quarter, Clifford also kicked an extra point and Quentin Tesi ran in a 2-point conversion.
Tesi scored the final PV TD with a 5-yard run in the third quarter. The PAT was kicked by Yoakum.
PV quarterback Andrew McFadden totaled 112 yards of offense by going 4-of-12 for 51 yards passing and rushing the ball eight times for 61 yards.[[In-content Ad]]
Back to the PV defensive effort, Coach Hollon spoke about his front line and the rotation of six players they use throughout the game in Clifford, Dakota Morgan, McGraw, Kottenbrook, Riley Markko and DeShawn Davis.
The Bearcat defense totaled seven sacks against Southeastern.
"We rotate these kids, and they have really stepped up their game this season," he said. "We want to continue to keep them fresh for the game, and they've played big, and this game, they created havoc."
With the season at the halfway point, the Bearcats are pleased with their 3-1-1 overall record.
"We are happy with having three wins, but we're kicking ourselves over our one loss," Hollon said. "This game, we had a let-down on special teams, and we'll continue to work on that until we fix it.
"Our defense has carried us this season, and I have no problem with that. I'd like for us to be more multidimensional on offense and have more consistency with our entire passing game."
Against SE on Friday, the Bearcats had 11 penalties. Before Friday, in four games, the Bearcats had just nine on the season.
The next game for PV will be Friday, Sept. 28 against Westfall, who leads the SVC at 4-1 overall, 2-0 in conference. Westfall is now coached by Keith Downing, who took over the program last week after former head coach Scott Keller resigned.
