Since his sophomore year, Hillsboro's Jordan Captain has been a valuable member of the Indians' basketball program. Entering his senior season, Captain has taken over the role as the go-to player and looks to make the most of the opportunity during the 2013-14 season.
Captain is coming off a season where he was the second-leading scorer and rebounder for the Indians, during a junior campaign that saw him average 10.8 points per game in 22 regular-season games. He totaled 237 points, and for that, he earned Associated Press Division II All-District special mention honors, while also garnering honorable mention from the Coaches District 14 All-District team.
Getting to his senior basketball season began at a very young age for Captain, as he said he was in the first grade the first time he can remember playing basketball.
"I've played basketball since I was a kid," he said. "I've played basketball with Latrell Haithcock my entire life, since elementary school. I've always played with older kids, and I felt like I had an advantage because of that."
Playing basketball with Haithcock since elementary school has helped Captain become a better player, Captain said. He said each of them knows what the other can do on the court.
"We know where each of us are at on the court and what we like to do," Captain said. "He can help me out, and I can help him out. When one of us is struggling, the other can help pick each other up."
Basketball is not just a sport for Captain, but he uses the game in his everyday life.

"I have fun playing basketball," he said. "The competition of the game is something that I look forward to, but I also play to get stress off my mind."
Captain has a good relationship with head coach Brett Prince, who has coached Captain since his sophomore season.
"I love playing basketball for Hillsboro," the senior said. "Coach Prince has helped me out a lot. He's helped me in many different ways, and he's helped me get to where I am today. I appreciate everything he's done for me since my sophomore year.
"I've worked hard in the weight room in the offseason, and this summer I worked really hard with Coach Prince. I think I'm ready. It means a lot that he'll help me out like he does. I have a lot of respect for him as a coach and a person. He's like another father figure, and I respect him."
Captain has also learned to become a leader this season.
"I have experience from Jarrod Hart last year in learning how to become a leader," Captain said. "I've taken some things he did last year to help me help the team. Like when the team is down, I'll tell them not to get down and keep playing amongst themselves."
Though Captain can't wait for the start of the regular season, he did look back at the very first time he played at the varsity level.
"I'm ready for Nov. 29 … I'm ready for the season to open and that first game," Captain said. "That's all I'm looking forward to. I'm just ready to get started.
"I remember the first game against Western Brown, I was really nervous, but after the first five minutes, I was fine."
