2013 Preview: Lynchburg-Clay Track and Field

The Lynchburg-Clay boys and girls track and field team look to compete to the best of their abilities this year, as they look to battle near the top of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference standings in 2013.
As for the girls track team, which is 17 members strong, they were the 4x800-meter relay champions of the SHAC last season, with all four runners returning in Alisa Elam, Ginny Gadzinski, Mackenzie Stevens and Sawyer Rammel. Also a member of the 4x800 last season, but eventually injured, was Sarah Spidel.
With the LC Lady Mustangs finishing third in the conference meet last season, LC lost just three seniors from a year ago, but they still have a good group of team members returning.
"We have good distance throwers returning," LC head coach Shawn McLaughlin said. "They (Emma Setty and Cayla Buchreitz) were in the Top 3 in the SHAC last year, as both went to regionals.
"We also have freshman Bailey Leininger who had a very successful season in junior high last year."
The goal is simple for LC in the girls division … win the conference title.

"I want to win the conference championship," McLaughlin said. "We've been making steady progress, and we'll be stronger this year, plus we're adding a group of freshmen that will help us out."
In the boys division, they didn't have a conference champion last season but had high finishers at the conference meet, earning a third-place finish.
"Our numbers at 29 should allow us to fill every event with quality athletes," McLaughlin said. "We have about the same numbers as last year, but it is always good to have participants in all the events."
Two seniors in the discus are Nicko Rowlands and Linus Stoltz, who were in the Top 5 one year ago, and senior Nate Jones in the 110m hurdles has shown improvement after an injury last year.
Another boys senior, Aaron Collins, will be looked at to compete in the 400m run, and others will be looked at to gain valuable points for LC this season.
"We have strong senior leadership this year," McLaughlin said. "We only have a few freshmen, but they are high quality. One of our shortfalls has been our sprinters, but we feel some of our freshmen will improve that part of our program."
