This season, the Hillsboro Lady Indians enter the softball season with some experience on their side, as seven players who have vast amounts of varsity time are set to begin their path toward improvement on the diamond.

The 2013 squad returns three seniors, two juniors and two sophomores who played at the varsity level last season, giving the Lady Tribe a variety of experienced players to set the tone.

Returning starters include seniors Taylor Moberly (catcher), Katie Baker (outfielder) and Amber Everhart (utility player); juniors Cailin Wehrung (pitcher) and Haylee Wehrung (utility player); and sophomores Ali Stratton (pitcher/second base) and Kirsten Juillerat (pitcher).

Everhart and Taylor Moberly (second-team All-District last season) were the batting leaders for the team last season.

Also on the team this season will be senior Sidney Merrick (utility player), juniors Lily Marshall (outfielder), Rachel Sexton (third base/catcher); and sophomores Trista Rhodes and Kaylynn Bell (first base/outfield).

The program has 12 freshmen. Those looking to gain varsity time are Madison Snyder (third base), Hanna Breeden (pitcher) and Kerstin Thornburgh (pitcher).

HHS, who had four wins last years, lost nine players from last season, including four seniors who started at the varsity level.

"Our pitcher who returns with the most experience is Cailin," HHS head coach Katie Moberly said. "She has the most experience being a junior, but the freshman pitchers have pitched well from what we've seen so far."

This group knows what is expected of them individually.

"They are all understanding of the team goals," Moberly said. "They have accepted their roles, and if they are still here, we know they know what their role is on this team.

"We have younger kids with talent and older kids with leadership experience, so I believe that is a good combination to have."

Though the team is young at pitching, Moberly said she expects good things from her staff.

"Our pitching has improved with the expectations and experience," she said. "They have bought into the system, and some have experience from pitching on different teams in the summer, even though they are young.

"What I like about this team is they are asking the right questions and not questioning us. They want to learn."
