The 2013 high school football season for the Zane Trace Pioneers saw them finish tied for a tri-Scioto Valley Conference championship, earning a trip to the postseason. Now, the Pioneers are going to try to repeat that success in '14.
The Pioneers are coached by Gary Peters (since the '09 season), and last season, the Pioneers finished with an overall mark of 5-6, as they were 5-2 in the SVC, tying with Paint Valley and Westfall as champions of the conference.
ZTHS scored a total of 308 points in 11 games last season, while allowing 339, ending the regular season by winning their final three games by a combined score of 106-73.
In those final three wins, the Pioneers defeated Huntington on the road (52-32), Westfall (26-20) and Unioto (28-21). Their other two wins came in Week 4 at Southeastern by a 61-27 score and vs. Adena (41-15) in Week 6.
As for their playoff game, the Pioneers had to face a very tough Bishop Hartley team on the road, where they lost by a 64-7 score. Bishop Hartley ended up finishing last season at 13-2.
Last year was the first playoff appearance by ZTHS since the '09 season.
In '13 the Pioneers opened the year with three straight losses by a combined score of 86-34 against the Logan Elm Braves, the Amanda-Clearcreek Aces and the McClain Tigers, all of which were non-conference games.
