Mustangs win SHAC home game against West Union; Clinton collects double-double 

The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs gained a Southern Hills Athletic Conference victory in their regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon by defeating the visiting West Union Dragons, 55-43. 

Lynchburg-Clay's win included a first quarter where they outscored the Dragons 14-8, but were outscored in the second quarter by West Union at 14-4 for a halftime score of 22-18 where they trailed the Dragons. 

Though it wasn’t the scenario they wanted entering halftime, the Mustangs were able to rebound with a big third quarter as LCHS gained the upper hand with a 21-3 third frame for a lead of 39-25 after three. 

In the fourth frame, the Dragons outscored the Mustangs 18-16 in a close final eight minutes of basketball, but LCHS was able to gain a 12-point victory. 

Lynchburg-Clay senior Denver Clinton finished with 24 points and 15 rebounds for a double-double, as the senior made 11 two-point baskets, and he was also 2-of-3 from the free-throw line. Clinton’s 15 rebounds included six offensive boards, plus he had one assist and seven steals. 

Tanner Roberts finished the game with 14 points and nine rebounds, with his points consisting of seven two-pointers. Roberts’ rebounds saw him have five offensive boards, plus he also finished with two assists and five blocks. 

Caden Boone totaled two points as he gained the start, as he also had one rebound, one assist and one steal. Also starting the game was Rhalstan Greene with one point and one blocked shot. 

Quin Wells finished with eight points off two 3-pointers and one two-point basket. Harley Lewis ended the game with two points, four rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Trevor Niehaus totaled four points, three rebounds, and two assists. 

As a team the Mustangs finished with 22 two-point baskets, two 3-pointers, and they were 5-of-9 from the free-throw line. LCHS also had 36 rebounds, 12 assists, 10 steals and eight blocks. 

The win moves the Mustangs to a final SHAC Div. I mark of 5-8, and overall their record is 11-11 this season. West Union finishes at 2-11 in the SHAC Div. I standings and they are 3-17 overall. 

Next for No. 12 seeded Lynchburg-Clay is a Division V SE District Quarterfinal Tournament game on Tuesday, Feb. 24 against the No. 5 seeded Zane Trace Pioneers at ZTHS with a 7 p.m. start.
