Mustangs gallop past West Union for 24-point victory
Friday night (Dec. 23) the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs traveled to West Union and promptly defeated the host Dragons in Southern Hills Athletic Conference action, winning by a 79-55 score.
The Mustangs — who are now 2-3 in SHAC games and 4-4 overall — led 27-19 after the first quarter, and after adding 28 more points in the second frame, they led West Union, 55-30 at halftime as WUHS scored 11 points in the second quarter.
LCHS won the third frame at 14-10, and the fourth quarter saw LCHS score 10 points and West Union add 15 points to their overall total.
Denver Clinton led all scorers with 29 points, finishing the game with one 3-pointer, 11 two-point buckets and going 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Clinton also had four rebounds, four steals and two assists.
Cody Bell totaled 11 points for the Mustangs, making two 3-pointers, one two-point basket and he was 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Bell also had five rebounds, five steals and four assists.
Cairen Goings totaled 11 points as well for LCHS, ending the game with five two-point baskets and one free throw.
The rest of the LCHS scoring included Asher Faust and Braedon West with nine points each. Also in the scoring column were Jay Cordrey with six points and Austin Bell scoring four points.
Cordrey and Austin Bell each led the Mustangs with six rebounds, and West was the assists leader with six.
As a team, the Mustangs totaled 32 rebounds, 20 assists, 13 steals and committed 12 turnovers.
LCHS also was 13-of-14 from the free-throw line, and they shot 42.9 percent from the field in the win.
The loss dropped West Union to 0-5 in the SHAC.
