Mustangs gain SHAC win over West Union

Friday night (Feb. 2) the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs defended their home court with a three-point win over the visiting West Union Dragons, winning by a 57-54 final score in their Southern Hills Athletic Conference game. 

The Mustangs set the tone with a strong first quarter by scoring 18 points, while holding the Dragons to nine points, as LCHS led by an 18-9 score following the first frame. 

The second quarter saw WUHS win the frame at 11-9, but LCHS still led at halftime by a 27-20 score. 

Each team came out of the locker room in the third quarter and scored 13 points, but in the fourth frame the Mustangs held on to the lead and the win, even after being outscored 21-17 in the final eight minutes.

Denver Clinton led LCHS with 22 points, finishing the game with nine two-point baskets and he went 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. Clinton also added four rebounds, four steals and three assists. 

Cody Bell totaled 17 points for the Mustangs with two 3-pointers, three two-point buckets, and he was 5-of-6 with his free-throw attempts. Bell also added seven rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block.

Austin Bell finished the game with 14 points, including five two-point baskets and a 4-of-6 performance from the free-throw line. Austin Bell also had four rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Braedon West finished with three points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist. Josiah Burns totaled one point, four assists and two rebounds. Asher Faust ended the game with three rebounds and one steal.

As a team the Mustangs totaled 24 rebounds, 12 assists, 11 steals and one block, plus they committed 11 turnovers. 

Following the win, the Mustangs were 5-6 in the SHAC and 8-9 overall. WUHS falls to 1-10 in the SHAC and 1-15 overall.
