Mustangs fall at home to first-place North Adams

DODSONVILLE — Following a first quarter where the two teams were close to even on the scoreboard, it was the visiting North Adams Green Devils who broke away from the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs for the remainder of the game, securing a Southern Hills Athletic Conference victory by defeating the Mustangs, 70-42 Friday night.
The Green Devils led 16-15 after the first quarter at LCHS where for the Mustangs had eight points off four baskets from Denver Clinton, plus they had a 3-pointer from Braedon West and two points each scored by Cody Bell and Trevor Niehaus in the opening frame.
The first quarter for the Green Devils saw them have three points scored by Jayce Rothwell, five points from Connor Young, two points off a basket by Konnor Rogers and six points scored by Breestin Schweickart.
North Adams extended their lead from one point to 12 points by the time the second quarter ended with 15 points in the frame, while holding the Mustangs to four points, as NAHS led 31-19 at halftime.
Lynchburg-Clay in the second had their points scored by West and Niehaus, each making a basket.
North Adams’ second quarter consisted of two points off a basket by Rothwell, two points from Young, five points by Rogers, two points from Schweickart and four points off two baskets by Carson Davis.
The Green Devils in the third quarter had two points scored by Rothwell, a 3-pointer by Rogers, five points (including a 3-pointer) from Carson Osborne and three points from Schweickart, totaling 13 points in the frame.
The 12-point third frame by Lynchburg-Clay included two converted free throws by West, four points (including a 3-pointer) by Niehaus, and two points each off baskets by Elam Faust and Clinton.
The Mustangs in the fourth frame were outscored 26-11 in the quarter, as the Green Devils forced multiple turnovers with strong defense, and points in transition.
LC had points from Asher Faust with a free throw, a 3-pointer made by Bell and Quinn Wells made a two-point basket. The fourth-quarter scoring also included a 3-pointer made by Elam Faust and two points off a basket made by Clinton.
North Adams had nine points by Rothwell, a two pointer by Young, 11 points scored by Rogers and four points scored by Davis in the fourth quarter.
For the game, the Green Devils were led in scoring by Rogers with 21 points, followed by Rothwell with 16 points and Schweickart with 11 points. The remaining final scoring totals for NAHS included Young (9), Schweickart (8) and Osborne (5).
Team totals for the Green Devils consisted of 25 two-point baskets, six 3-pointers, and they were 2-of-3 from the free-throw line.
Lynchburg-Clay was led in scoring by Clinton with 12 points, making six two-point baskets.
The rest of the Lynchburg-Clay final scoring included Wells (2), Asher Faust (3), Bell (5), Elam Faust (5), West (7) and Niehaus (8).
Team totals for the Mustangs were 13 two-point baskets, four 3-pointers and they were 4-of-10 from the free-throw line.
LCHS now stands at 8-11 overall with a SHAC Division I record of 6-6. North Adams improves to 12-0 in the SHAC Division I standings, clinching the SHAC Division I title with one conference game remaining. Overall, the Green Devils are 15-5.
Next for the Mustangs is a SHAC game on Saturday, Feb. 8 on the road against the Eastern Warriors at 7:30 p.m. at EHS.
