Mustangs baseball falls to Portsmouth

Portsmouth opened Monday’s game with a three-run first inning, and it was too much for the away team Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs to overcome, as they dropped their 2023 season opener to the Portsmouth Trojans, 4-1. 

The Trojans not only scored three runs in the bottom of the first, they added their final run in the bottom of the fourth for a 4-0 lead. The Mustangs scored their lone run in the top of the sixth with Luke Smith batting in Josiah Burns, who scored the run. 

LCHS finished with one run, three hits and two errors. Portsmouth finished with four runs, nine hits and one errors. 

Burns finished the game with one run and one walk. Braedon West also drew a walk, and Smith was 1-for-3 with one RBI. Christian Flowers finished 1-for-2 with a walk, while Asher Faust was 1-for-3. 

Burns and Cody Bell each were hit by a pitch, and Burns walks had two steals. 

Isaac Eyre was charged with the loss for LCHS as he pitched 5.1 innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on nine hits and two walks. He finished with one strikeout. Christian Flowers pitched 0.2 inning of relief, allowing no runs, hits or walks. 

The Mustangs (0-1) are scheduled to be on the road Tuesday in SHAC action, as they will face the Fairfield Lions (1-0) at 5 p.m.
