On Monday, April 27, a dedication ceremony was held at Lynchburg-Clay High School, where the outdoor athletic fields were officially unveiled as the Terry and Jane McGinnis Family Athletic Complex.

The facility has been renamed in honor of Terry and Jane McGinnis in honor of their many years of generosity and its impact on Lynchburg-Clay Local Schools.

The following speech was written by Lynchburg-Clay Board of Education member Stacie Rhonemus:

Terry and Jane purchased The Wallingford Store in 1978, and Terry’s Grocery & Pizza began as we know it today. Over the past 48 years, they have dedicated their lives to their family business and our local community.

With a true servant’s heart, they have contributed an extraordinary amount to the Lynchburg-Clay School community by donating to help the numerous student organizations such as the FFA, the music program, the PTO and the athletic program, to just mention a few. Numerous community organizations such as Lynchburg Knothole Youth Baseball and the local Girl Scouts are also supported by their selfless acts and welcomed into the store for their events and fundraisers.

Terry and Jane created the Terry’s Scholarship program in 1993. To date, nearly 150 Lynchburg-Clay students benefited from Terry & Jane’s commitment. These scholarships helped give opportunities to our students that they wouldn’t have otherwise. This is a solid example of Terry and Jane’s belief in the importance of education and our student success.

While their spirit of giving toward our school and community organizations is clear and everlasting, their impact reaches even further than that. Perhaps their greatest impact has come through their family business.

For nearly five decades, Terry and Jane have shaped and influenced our greatest asset — our youth — by giving countless teenagers and young adults their first job, and with it, far more than just a paycheck. At their store, they created a place of encouragement, mentorship and growth, where young people learned responsibility, employability skills and the value of a strong work ethic and an honest day’s work.

Terry and Jane invested in those around them, offering encouragement when it was needed most and pushing individuals to step outside their comfort zones. In many ways, they reinforce the same values that we as educators strive to instill in our classrooms and students daily.

Terry and Jane’s impact on the Lynchburg-Clay community cannot be measured in wins, losses, dollars donated or even years of service. When we think about what it means to truly support a school district, it’s easy to picture the visible moments: the games, the events, and the celebrations. But what often goes unseen are the countless hours, the quiet sacrifices, and the unwavering commitment behind the scenes … and it is in those unseen moments that Terry and Jane made their greatest mark on our community.

Their dedication to the Lynchburg-Clay community has never been about recognition. As a matter of fact, I am certain that Terry wouldn’t be in attendance today, if he was still with us. Terry never wanted the limelight to be on him and Jane, but rather on those that they were serving and the community. You see, for Terry and Jane, their dedication has always been about people — ensuring that all students would have the same opportunities, all athletes would have a place to compete and families have a space to come together. They have invested not just their time, but their energy, their resources and their hearts into making this community stronger.

Because of Terry and Jane, generations of students have been directly impacted by their generosity. Students have had fields to play on, programs to grow in and a sense of pride in being part of something well supported and happily valued. This kind of legacy doesn’t happen by accident — it happens because of consistent, selfless giving over many years.

Naming an athletic complex in their honor is not just about recognizing Terry and Jane’s past contributions and the impact they’ve had on our community; it is about setting a standard for the future. It reminds every young person who steps onto these fields that commitment matters, that community matters, and that the efforts of two individuals can leave a lasting impact on countless lives.

The McGinnis family represents the very best of what this community stands for — generosity, humility and an enduring belief in supporting others — and it is only fitting that their name becomes a permanent part of a place where so many memories will continue to be made.

On behalf of the Lynchburg-Clay Board of Education and our entire school district, it is truly an honor to welcome you to the Terry & Jane McGinnis Family Athletic Complex.
