Lady Mustangs surpass Fayetteville in OT

Some games just take a little longer than others, and Monday night for the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs it took four extra minutes of in-game action to get past the tough Fayetteville Lady Rockets in their showdown, winning by a 55-52 score.
Although it was a game between two Southern Hills Athletic Conference teams, this was a non-conference matchup.
The game played at Fayetteville-Perry High School on Monday, Feb. 5 saw the Lady Mustangs lead 8-6 after the first quarter, with Macy Etienne scoring four points in the frame off two baskets, while Addison West and Ella Barry each added two points to the LC scoring total.
Fayetteville’s six points in the first quarter included a 3-pointer from Ellie Attinger, two points scored by Cara Rummel and a free throw made by Lilly Carlier.
The second frame saw the Lady Rockets outscore LCHS 18-15, taking a 24-23 halftime lead over the visiting LCHS squad.
Fayetteville had seven points from Carlier in the quarter, while Rummel connected with a 3-pointer, Aubrey Barber also hit a trey, and Ryley Kleemeyer made four free throws. The second frame also saw Victoria Thompson sink a free throw.
LCHS in the second quarter had 11 points off baskets by Massey, including a 3-pointer. The frame also saw West score four points off two baskets.
The Lady Mustangs won the third quarter at 18-13, giving them a 41-37 lead after three complete quarters.
In the third for the visitors, it was West scoring five points (including a 3-pointer), while Massey added four points off two baskets, and Ella Barry scored six points off three baskets. There was also a 3-pointer from Etienne in the quarter.
Fayetteville’s third quarter included six points by Barber off two 3-pointers, five points scored by Rummel, and Kleemeyer scored two points.
In the fourth quarter, each team finished with 48 points, as Fayetteville won the quarter scoring at 11-7.
For the host Lady Rockets, they forced OT with Murphy scoring eight points in the final quarter, while Barber made her fourth 3-pointer of the game.
LCHS in the final frame had six points scored by Massey and a free throw made by Etienne.
In overtime, LCHS broke away from the win with a 7-4 four-minute OT.
In the overtime period, West was 4-of-4 from the free-throw line, and Etienne scored two points off a basket.
For Fayetteville, their overtime scoring was four points from Murphy off two two-point baskets.
In all for the game, four LCHS players reached the scoring column with Massey leading all scorers with 22 points, as she totaled eight two-point buckets, one 3-pointer and she was 3-of-5 from the free-throw line.
West totaled 15 points with one 3-pointer, three two-point field goals and she was 6-of-7 with her free-throw attempts.
Etienne finished with 10 points, making three baskets from the field, a 3-pointer and she went 1-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Barry finished the LCHS scoring with eight points as she made four two-point baskets in the overtime win.
Murphy and Barber led Fayetteville with 12 points each, while Rummel scored 10 points.
The win moves LCHS to 11-2 in the SHAC Division I standings (tied for second place), and they are now 15-5 overall.
Fayetteville stands at 9-4 in the SHAC Division II standings (first place) with a 13-7 overall record.
Next for the Lady Mustangs is one final SHAC game this regular season, as they’ll host the Peebles Lady Indians on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
Fayetteville has one SHAC game left this season, coming on Thursday, Feb. 8 on the road at Fairfield with a 7:30 p.m. start.
