The regular-season and Southern Hills Athletic Conference finale for the Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs was a “perfect afternoon” for pitcher Cole Wells, as the hurler pitched a perfect game Monday against the West Union Dragons.
The SHAC win by the Mustangs — and ensuing perfect game — by Wells at WUHS saw LCHS win by a 12-0 score in five innings, and as for Wells, not a single baseball left the infield in the perfect effort.
Wells finished the day allowing no runs, hits or walks and struck out 12 batters, throwing just 49 pitches in the win, as 43 of those pitches were strikes.
In the 15 batters he faced, Wells had the aforementioned 12 strikeouts (11 swinging strikeouts), a popup to second base, a groundout to second base and a groundout back to the pitcher.
Wells struck out the side in the third and fifth innings, ending the game on a called third strike.
In the first inning, Wells struck out two batters, and the second out of the inning was a pop up to second base. The second inning saw two more strikeouts, which bookended a groundout to second base.
The third inning saw three straight strikeouts, followed by two strikeouts and a ball hit back to the pitcher for the three outs for the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, Wells had the first two outs recorded with swinging third strikes, and he finished the effort with a called third strike.
Offensively, the Mustangs scored three runs in the top of the first, followed by one run in the second, four runs in the third, another one-run inning in the fourth and a three-run fifth inning.
LCHS totaled 11 hits and had no errors, while West Union committed three errors.
