LC Mustangs take down rival Fairfield

Thursday night was a good night for the host Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs, as they hosted and defeated a Highland County counterpart and Southern Hills Athletic Conference, the Fairfield Lions, by a 5-1 score.
The game was full of scoring in the first inning with the Lions striking first with a run in the top of the first inning, but that was answered with a two-run bottom of the first for a 2-1 lead.
LCHS added one run in the bottom of the third, extending their lead to 3-1, then they added a run in the bottom of the fifth. One final run was scored in the bottom of the sixth for the SHAC win.
In all for the Mustangs, they not only scored five runs, but they totaled four hits and committed zero errors. FHS (2-1) totaled one run, had two hits and committed three errors.
Four players combined for the four LCHS hits against the Lions, and those batters were Braedon West (1-for-3, one run), Cole Wells (1-for-3, a double, one run), Christian Flowers (1-for-3, one RBI) and Asher Faust (1-for-3, one RBI).
The Mustangs (1-1) also had Josiah Burns score three runs, Austin Bell hit an RBI and Jay Cordrey scored a run.
Drawing walks for LCHS were Burns (two) and West. Steals were converted by Cody Bell, Cordrey, Burns and Faust.
Wells was the winning pitcher with a solid pitching performance. Wells, in a seven-inning complete game, allowed one earned run on two hits and four walks, and he struck out eight batters. Wells finished with 105 pitches, 65 for strikes.
For the Lions (2-1), they totaled two hits off the bats of Cade Miller (1-for-3, one BB) and Wyatt Willey (1-for-3, a double).
Fairfield’s Zane Matthews and Corey Zimmerman were hit by pitches. Miller and Zimmerman each had a steal.
The loss was charged to Gabe Fouch, who in six innings allowed five runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks. Fouch struck out 10 batters in the loss. For the game, Fouch threw 102 pitches, 66 for strikes.
LCHS is now 2-1 overall this season.
