Lady Indians fall to Notre Dame; split DH with Williamsburg

Thursday night (May 2) the Hillsboro Lady Indians had an epic non-conference battle with the Notre Dame Lady Titans, where after 12 innings it was Notre Dame defeating the Lady Indians, 2-0, with the two runs coming in the top of the 12th off a two-run home run by Gwen Sparks.

The extra-inning loss for Hillsboro against the state-ranked Lady Titans saw them get into a pitcher’s duel with Hillsboro’s Camryn Spruell battling Sparks of Notre Dame. 

The winning pitcher Sparks in 12 innings allowed no runs, one hit and walked just two batters, with 27 strikeouts. Sparks threw 182 pitches in the win, 118 for strikes. 

Spruell in the loss also pitched 12 innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and no walks with 23 strikeouts. 

Hillsboro’s lone hit was a single by Isabelle Brunck, who finished 1-for-4. Halle Reveal was hit by a pitch to also reach the bases for the Lady Indians. 

Each team committed one error.

Hillsboro on Saturday (May 4) split an away doubleheader against the Williamsburg Wildcats, with HHS winning game one, 6-1, and dropping game two by a 9-3 score. 

In the first game on Saturday, the Lady Indians had three two-run innings, with two runs in the top of the fourth, fifth and seventh innings as the team collected a total of 10 hits in game one with only one error. 

Williamsburg in game one had six hits and committed three errors. 

For Hillsboro in the first game of the twin bill, Mylea Fridley was 2-for-4 with one run, and Camryn Spruell finished 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. 

HHS also had Isabelle Brunck finish 1-for-4, and Eowyn Brown was 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Addi Huff had a 1-for-4 game, knocking in two RBI, and Madison Dearmon was 1-for-4 with one RBI. Chloe Roberts finished with two runs and three walks. Clemons collected an RBI. 

In the circle, Spruell was the winning pitcher, finishing with seven innings pitched, allowing one run (unearned) on six hits and three walks, with 17 strikeouts.

In game two of the DH, the Lady Indians lost 9-3. Hillsboro scored a run in the top of the first and equaled the feat in the top of the second inning. HHS added one final run in the fifth inning. 

Williamsburg scored three runs in the bottom of the first, followed by one run in the second and one run in the fourth. They collected three runs in the bottom of the fifth and scored one last run in the bottom of the sixth inning. 

HHS finished the game with five hits and one error, while Williamsburg totaled 11 hits and one error. 

At the plate for Hillsboro, Fridley was 1-for-2 with two runs and a walk. Spruell went 2-for-3 with one RBI. 

Roberts was 1-for-3 (a double), and Dearmon was 1-for-3 with one RBI. 

Reagan Clemons walked once, Huff had one walk and scored a run. 

The results of the past three non-conference games leave Hillsboro with a 19-4 overall record.
