Hillsboro scores 3 runs in shutout win over Wellston
Scoring their three runs in the fourth and sixth innings, the Hillsboro Lady Indians used that run support to go with a phenomenal pitching performance by Camryn Spruell to defeat visiting Wellston, 3-0, as the Lady Indians played their first regular-season game on their new softball field Thursday evening at Hillsboro High School.
The Lady Indians took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, then in the bottom of the sixth they added two more insurance runs to seal what became a 3-0 non-conference win over Wellston.
In the circle, the Lady Indians were dominant as Spruell pitched a one-hit shutout against Wellston. Spruell, in seven innings, allowed no runs on the one hit, and she also walked none. Spruell finished with 17 strikeouts, bringing her season total to 54 strikeouts in the first three games of the 2024 season. On Thursday, Spruell threw 78 pitches, 63 for strikes.
At the plate, the Lady Indians (2-1) totaled four hits in the victory, with Halle Reveal going 1-for-3 and Spruell finishing 1-for-2 with two runs (including a double) and a walk. Chloe Roberts was 1-for-3 (a double) with one RBI, and teammate Isabelle Brunck ended the game at 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Also for HHS, Mylea Fridley scored a run and forced a walk, while Eowyn Brown walked once.
The win sends Hillsboro to an overall record of 2-1.
