Hillsboro Lady Indians tennis begins ’26 season with win over Waynesville; falls to Waverly

HILLSBORO — The 2026 Hillsboro Lady Indians tennis team has begun their fall season, with matches against the Waverly Lady Tigers and the Waynesville Lady Spartans.

Hillsboro has a roster of 12 players consisting of seniors Adalyn Gaines and Ciara Woods, along with juniors Lilah Hardy, Kamrie Lee and Taylor-Ann Scruggs. 

Sophomores for HHS are Breanna Anderson and Kaylin Branscom. Freshmen this season are K’Nasia Leeper, Brynn Stanley, Charlotte Walch, Adalynn West and Lizzy Burris. Hillsboro’s head coach is Matt Schneider. 

On Friday, Aug. 10, the Lady Indians traveled to face the Waverly Lady Tigers, where it was the home team Waverly team winning by a 5-0 score in non-conference play. 

For WHS, Claire Morrison won by scores of 6-0, 6-0 in first singles against Gaines (HHS). In second singles, Claire Shaffer won against Scruggs by scores of 6-1, 6-1. Third singles saw Kynton Beerman (WHS) win against Woods (HHS) at 7-5, 6-0. 

Waverly in first doubles (Ella Shepherd and Mya Osborne) defeated Anderson and Branscom (HHS) 6-0, 6-0. Second singles was also won by Waverly (Selina Halko and Molly McKenzie) as they defeated Hillsboro’s Hardy and Lee by scores of 6-1, 6-0. 

On Monday, Aug. 10, the Hillsboro Lady Indians hosted their first home match of the season with Waynesville visiting Highland County for a non-conference contest at Hillsboro High School. 

The Lady Indians won the non-conference match 3-2. 

Hillsboro won first singles against Waynesville as Gaines defeated Maya Hoppe by scores of 6-2, 6-1. Hillsboro won second singles with Scruggs defeating Kalyn Baird by scores of 6-1, 7-6. 

Hillsboro’s third win was second doubles with Hardy and Lee winning against Megan Bridgman and Laila Capozzlo by scores of 6-2, 6-0. 

HHS lost in third singles as Claira Crouse won for Waynesville over Woods at 6-0, 6-2. In first doubles, WHS (Mya Wenzler and Brenna Bates) defeated Hillsboro (Anderson and Branscom) by scores of 6-3, 6-1.
