HILLSBORO — The Hillsboro Lady Indians played well as a team, according to their head coach Amanda Miller, and in the process won at home on Thursday night against their visiting Highland County counterpart, the Fairfield Lady Lions, by a 4-3 score at Hillsboro High School.
Hillsboro won with a big performance from junior Kobie Miles, who netted a hat trick in the win, as she scored three of the four goals by the Lady Indians Thursday.
Also with a goal for Hillsboro was senior Peighton Bledsoe, as all four goals by the Indians were enough to fend off the three-goal performance of the Fairfield squad.
“We played much more as a team tonight. We stayed positive. We didn't get down on ourselves for every mistake we made,” HHS head coach Amanda Miller said. “We were able to keep better possession of the ball, especially during the second half, and we finished. That's something that we've been missing the last couple years, and we finally are finishing the ball.
“It's a great feeling (seeing her team progress), especially with only having six girls that had ever seen the varsity field like when we started the season. It's there. They're all improving every day, and we're getting to where we want to be.”
Coach Miller also spoke about others who played a quality game for the Lady Indians.
“I thought we had some great games from Kamryn Asbury and Riley Meek,” she said. “They both played very well on the left. I thought they both had great games. This was a team win.”
Fairfield’s goals went to the back of the net courtesy of Emerson Zink, scoring all three goals for a hat trick, with assists from Rilee Quickle, Miley Brown and Vivian Henninger.
“Give Hillsboro credit, they came out ready,” FHS head coach Jacob Alexander said. “We got up one goal early, and I think our girls relaxed a little bit. We got our work cut out for us. We lost a good senior class, but we're coming together.
“This is one that they need to learn from. We need to learn from this. We were down one player tonight, which moved some things around, and that kind of threw things out of kilter defensively, which it showed. We did better as the game went on with things, and I feel like that game goes another 10 minutes. We were in a position, but we can't get ourselves in that position.”
Next for the Lady Indians (2-1) is a game Tuesday, Aug. 27 at home vs. the Chillicothe Lady Cavaliers at 6:45 p.m. in an FAC showdown.
Fairfield is scheduled to play again Monday, Aug. 26 vs. Northwest at 5 p.m. in a home non-conference match.
