GREENFIELD — It was a festive evening at McClain High School on Tuesday, Feb. 10 when the Tigers boys and girls wrestling teams hosted Amanda-Clearcreek and Waverly on senior night.
A huge crowd was on hand to show their support and honor those Tiger and Lady Tiger wrestlers who were competing in their final home matches in the McClain gymnasium.
Both teams treated the Tiger faithful to some exciting and extremely competitive matches and senior Dalton Rowland highlighted the night by winning his two matches giving him 99 wins for his high school career.
Rowland needs just one more victory to achieve that monumental goal that every high school wrestler works so hard to conquer. He’ll battle to reach that historic plateau during the Frontier Athletic Conference tournament that will be held this Saturday, Feb. 14 at Washington High School beginning at 10 a.m.
The boys team won both of their matches Tuesday, narrowly slipping by a very talented Amanda-Clearcreek squad 35-26, then defeated Waverly 60-12.
“I thought Owen Sykes, Carlos Gonzalez, Jack Spenser, and Dalton Rowland all wrestled incredibly well and pulled off big wins that helped us come out on top tonight,” McClain head coach Caleb Cooper said. “Dalton (Rowland) won both of his matches in impressive fashion giving him 99 now for his high school career at McClain High School.
“This team has been working extremely hard when we’ve been able to practice over the last couple of weeks during the recent inclement weather and our coaching staff is very proud of how everyone has responded to these challenges.”
Coach Cooper hopes a great crowd comes out Saturday at Washington H.S. to support all of the McClain boys and girls wrestlers and hopefully to see Rowland get that elusive 100th victory.
The sectional tournament will begin on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Gallia Academy H.S. in Gallipolis.
