Lady Tigers knock off Zane Trace

GREENFIELD — The McClain Lady Tigers varsity girls soccer team ran their record to 2-1 on the young season with an impressive 6-1 victory over a very athletic and scrappy Zane Trace team, Thursday (Aug. 21) at McClain Field.
The Lady Pioneers scored the first goal of the contest at the 37:33 mark on an unbelievable and very long shot from Gabi Mathis that hit off the top of the goal and went in.
“They got a long shot to go in on us early in the first half when we had really dominated down on our end,” said McClain head coach Blain Bergstrom. “We made a mistake and they got a free-shot that hit the top of the bar, and went down and you couldn’t save that one, it was just an excellent shot.”
Senior Addison Olaker scored McClain’s first goal to tie the score at the 23:29 mark of the opening half, and Mylie Lovett followed that up with a big goal just before the first half horn sounded to give the Lady Tigers the slim 2-1 half time advantage.
The McClain girls came out in the second half and dominated on both ends of the field. Paisley Pryor scored McClain’s third goal of the match at the 35:03 mark from a really nice assist by Olaker.
Moments later, Lydia Mootispaw scored the Lady Tigers’ fourth goal on another good assist by Larah Henson. Olaker and Pryor both got their second goals of the match to finish off the scoring later in the half to give McClain the 6-1 non-conference victory.
“We came out in the second half and made some nice plays and were able to get everyone into the game and that’s always nice,” Bergstrom said. “We have several girls that can score and they can also create a lot of opportunities for others so we have a lot of girls making assists and a lot of girls that can put the ball in the net.
“Our goalie Leah Lovett didn’t get much work tonight and that’s what you want because that means our defense was really good and we kept the ball on their side of the field most of the game. Our girls in the back play excellent defense but they didn’t have to do much tonight because we kept the ball on the offensive end, but they’re ready to go.”
McClain 2-1 travels to Peebles on Saturday, Aug. 23. From there the Lady Tigers return home to host Chillicothe on Tuesday, Aug. 26 at 7 p.m., and then MHS will then host Washington on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. in FAC matches.
