Boys Basketball Report: Lynchburg-Clay, Whiteoak earn SHAC wins; Lions, Tigers fall in games

The Whiteoak Wildcats and Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs earned road wins on Tuesday (Jan. 21), while the Fairfield Lions and McClain Tigers lost on the road.

Wildcats gain victory at West Union
 

Whiteoak earned a Southern Hills Athletic Conference road victory on Tuesday night, defeating the West Union Dragons, 54-52. 

West Union held a 12-11 lead after the end of the first quarter, and WUHS won the second frame at 14-11 for a halftime advantage over Whiteoak of 26-22. 

The Dragons also won the third frame at 16-9, leading 42-31 after three frames. 

Then came the fourth quarter where the Wildcats broke away from the Dragons, playing their best basketball when it mattered most. 

WHS in the fourth quarter outscored the Dragons 23-10 to gain the two-point win over the SHAC rival. 

Whiteoak’s leading scorer was Sawyer Blair with 19 points, finishing the game with two two-point baskets, four 3-pointers and he was 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. 

Zander Roades ended the game with 16 points finishing with four two-point baskets, two 3-pointers, and he went 2-of-2 in his free-throw attempts. 

Brady Brandenburg finished with eight points for the Wildcats, and the remaining scoring for WHS included Zack Igo (two), Jason Gaskins (four), and Jonah Michael (five). 

WHS totaled 12 two-point baskets, seven 3-pointers and they were 9-of-12 from the free-throw line. 

West Union totaled 20 two-point baskets, two 3-pointers, and they were 6-of-11 from the free-throw line. 

The Dragons were led in scoring by Trey Grooms with 19 points and Gavin Jarvis with 17 points. 

Whiteoak is now 3-4 in the SHAC Division II standings and 6-8 overall. West Union moves to 0-7 in the SHAC Division II Standings and 3-10 overall.

Mustangs win road game at Ripley 

The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs were road warriors on Tuesday evening, traveling for a Southern Hills Athletic Conference game against the Ripley Blue Jays and returning home with a 68-45 victory. 

Lynchburg-Clay had a very strong first quarter where they posted 25 points on offense, and RHS scored 14 points for an 11-point lead. 

The second frame saw the Mustangs score 12 points, while Ripley scored 14 points, but it was Lynchburg-Clay leading at halftime by a 37-23 score. 

LCHS scored 18 points in the third quarter, they they added 13 points in the fourth frame. Ripley scored nine points in the third quarter and 13 points in the final quarter. 

The Mustangs were led in scoring by Elam Faust with 19 points, as he made three 3-pointers and five two-point buckets. 

Denver Clinton totaled 16 points for LCHS with seven two pointers, and he was also 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. 

Trevor Niehaus ended the game with 14 points, totaling three 3-pointers, two two-point baskets and one free throw. 

The remaining LC scoring included Asher Faust (four), Jay Corey (two), Cody Bell (four), Quinn Wells (six), and Braedon West (three). 

The win improves the Mustangs to 4-5 in the SHAC Division I standings and 5-8 overall. Ripley falls to 0-7 in the SHAC Division II standings and 1-12 overall.

Lions lose close game at Unioto 

Traveling to Ross County for a Tuesday non-conference game, the Fairfield Lions played a close basketball contest against the Unioto Shermans, but once the final buzzer sounded it was the host Unioto team that were the winners with a 53-49 victory over the Lions. 

Unioto led the Lions 14-12 after the first quarter, and the Lions outscored UHS 14-12 in the second frame for a tied score at halftime of 26-26. 

In the second half, the third quarter saw Fairfield score nine points and Unioto add 15 points to their overall total. During the fourth quarter the Shermans scored 12 points and Fairfield scored 14 points. 

The Lions saw Brody Smith lead the way in the scoring column with 18 points, making four 3-pointers, two two-point baskets, and he also finished 2-of-3 from the free-throw line. 

Logan McIntosh finished with 12 points, ending the game with one 3-pointer, three two-pointers, and he was 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. 

The Lions also had seven points from Griffin Friend, and six points scored by Quentin McIntosh. The remaining Lions scoring included Caleb Barrera with four points and Caleb Rice with two points. 

As a team the Lions finished with 12 two-point baskets, five 3-pointers, and they were 8-of-13 from the free-throw line. 

Unioto was led by Caden Cutright with 16 points. Unioto now stands at 14-2 overall. 

Fairfield now has an overall record of 10-3 overall.

Tigers fall on road at Washington
 

Tuesday evening, in Frontier Athletic Conference action, the McClain Tigers lost to the host Washington Blue Lions 56-47. 

In the game, the Blue Lions led 19-7 after the first quarter, and following a 14-10 second frame in favor of Washington, the Tigers trailed 33-17 at halftime. 

The second half saw Washington score 10 points in the third and 13 points in the fourth frame, while the Tigers had a 10-point third frame and 20-point fourth quarter. 

For McClain, the were led in scoring by Jordan Bell with 15 points, making three 3-pointers and three two-point baskets. 

Other final scoring totals for MHS included: Zane Adams with 11 points (making three 3-pointers and two free throws), Julien Evans (seven), Hudson Lovett (five), Riley Cummins (five), Brandon Greene (two), and Owen Sykes (two). 

Washington was led by Noah Haithcock with 20 points. 

The loss moves the Tigers to 0-5 in the FAC and 5-6 overall. Washington improves to 3-3 in the FAC and 8-8 overall.
