Lady Lions suffer SHAC loss to Fayetteville

The Fairfield Lady Lions hosted the Fayetteville Lady Rockets at Fairfield High School on Tuesday, where the sixth inning proved to be too much for the host Fairfield team, allowing five runs in the inning and eventually suffering a 6-2 Southern Hills Athletic Conference loss. 

The game featured two of the top teams in the SHAC, and two of the conference’s top pitchers in Fairfield’s Caitlyn Quickle and Fayetteville’s Isabella Waddle. 

Fayetteville’s Waddle took a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh inning as Fayetteville eventually gained the four-run win after allowing just two hits in the final inning. 

The Lady Rockets (2-0, 3-1) out-hit the Lady Lions (2-2, 5-5), 15-2 in the game as the Lady Rockets committed zero errors, while Fairfield had four errors in the conference loss. 
 
The game was scoreless through the first two innings, but Fayetteville scored an unearned run in the top of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead as Ava Wells doubled, stole third base and scored on a throwing error.
 
Caitlyn Quickle pitched strong through five innings allowing just the one unearned run while scattering seven hits and stranding nine Fayetteville runners on base. Quickle pitched out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the top of the fourth inning.
 
Fayetteville strung multiple hits together in the top of the sixth inning, scoring five runs and taking a 6-0 lead into the seventh inning.  

Fayetteville’s Waddle retired the first two Lady Lion batters in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Emmi Vance broke up the no-hitter with a single to right field. Carly Sanders spoiled the shutout with a home run over the left-centerfield fence.
 
Caitlyn Quickle (4-4) suffered the loss for Fairfield, pitching six innings, allowing 13 hits, six runs (five earned), no walks, and she had 11 strikeouts.  

Katelyn Chambliss pitched one inning, allowing two hits, no runs, no earned runs and no walks.  

Fayetteville’s Waddle (3-1) was the winning pitcher, pitching seven innings, allowing two hits, two earned runs, one walk, and she finished with 12 strikeouts.    
 
The Fairfield Lady Lions’ game at Georgetown on Wednesday has been canceled due to weather.
