Lady Lions gain SHAC wins over North Adams, Ripley

The Fairfield Lady Lions kicked off the week with two consecutive Southern Hills Athletic Conference wins, defeating North Adams on the road, 11-1, then returning home to defeat Ripley, 10-0.

It was an absolutely beautiful, sunny, warm day for softball in Seaman Monday (April 15), as the Fairfield Lady Lions traveled to North Adams High School to play the much-improved North Adams Lady Devils in a SHAC game. The North Adams Lady Devils (4-5, 2-1 SHAC) entered the game as the first-place team in the large school division, but the Fairfield Lady Lions (6-5, 3-2 SHAC) played their best game of the season to defeat the Lady Devils, 11-1 in 5 innings.
 
Monday afternoon saw the Lady Lions put together a complete game with great pitching; aggressive base running; great hitting, including five extra-base hits; and no errors. Caitlyn Quickle and Katelyn Chambliss combined to limit North Adams to only one hit and one earned run. 

Lady Lion hitters were led by Jobey Hattan with three hits, including a home run; Caitlyn Quickle with two hits and a triple; and Rilee Quickle with two hits, including a triple.
 
Fairfield scored two runs in the top of the first inning to take the early lead. The Lady Lions returned to their roots, manufacturing runs with bunts and aggressive base running. Rilee Quickle drew a base on balls to lead off the inning. Hattan then laid down the perfect bunt for a base hit as Quickle raced all the way to third base on the play. 

Hattan then stole second base to put both runners in scoring position. One out later, Emmi Vance plated Quickle with a ground ball to the left side of the infield as Hattan advanced to third base. Carly Sanders then singled to centerfield to score Hattan.
 
Starting pitcher Caitlyn Quickle was dominating in the bottom of the first inning, striking out the side in order.
 
Fairfield took a commanding lead in the top of the second inning with six runs. Addison Bales doubled to lead off the inning, Sydney Hooper followed with a single up the middle, Ally Maynard singled to left field, Rilee Quickle tripled to drive in two runs, Hattan singled and Vance circled the bases on a triple and a throwing error.
 
North Adams made the score 8-1 with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Paige Evans drew a walk to lead off the inning, and Karis Tumbleson followed with a double to the centerfield fence. 
 
The Fairfield Lady Lions completed the scoring with three runs in the top of the third inning. Maynard was hit by a pitch, Rilee Quickle singled and Hattan hit an inside-the-park home run to centerfield.

Chambliss entered the game in relief of Quickle, shutting out the Lady Devils in the fourth and fifth innings on no hits.

Caitlyn Quickle (5-4) picked up the win for Fairfield. Quickle’s pitching line: 3 innings, 1 hit, 1 run, 1 earned run, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts. Katelyn Chambliss’ pitching line: 2 innings, no hits, no runs, no earned runs, 1 walk and 2 strikeouts. 

Carlee Garrison (4-4) suffered the loss for North Adams. Garrison’s pitching line: 2.3 innings, 10 hits, 11 runs, 10 earned runs, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts. Karis Tumbleson’s pitching line: 2.6 innings, 2 hits, no runs, no earned runs, 2 walks, no strikeouts.

The Fairfield Lady Lions (7-5, 4-2 SHAC) continued their winning ways Tuesday afternoon as they hosted another Southern Hills Athletic Conference opponent in the Ripley Lady Blue Jays (0-6, 0-2 SHAC) on another gorgeous day for softball at the Fairfield High School Baseball/Softball Complex. The Lady Lions continued to score double-digit runs on double-digit hits, as they rolled over the Ripley Lady Blue Jays 10-0 in five innings.
 
Caitlyn Quickle was brilliant in the circle, throwing a one-hit shutout while striking out eight Lady Blue Jays. Quickle also led the Lady Lions’ 10-hit attack with three hits, a single, double and home run, while knocking in four runs. 

Jobey Hattan and Emmi Vance also hit home runs on the afternoon. The Lady Lions’ defense was outstanding again, with only a catcher’s interference miscue in the game.
 
Fairfield scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Hattan was safe on an error and Quickle hit a home run over the centerfield fence to give her team a 2-0 lead.
 
Fairfield added three more runs in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Hattan hit a mammoth home run over the left field fence, Caitlyn Quickle singled and Alyssa Bales entered the game as a courtesy runner for Quickle and promptly stole second base. Vance followed with a RBI single to centerfield and stole second base. Carly Sanders singled to left field to drive home Vance.
 
The Fairfield Lady Lions completed the scoring with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Addison Bales singled to centerfield to lead off the inning, Sydney Hooper laid down the perfect sacrifice bunt to advance Bales to second base. One out later, Rilee Quickle was hit by a pitch, and Hattan followed with an RBI double to drive in Bales and advance Rilee Quickle to third base. Caitlyn Quickle doubled to knock in Quickle and Hattan. Alyssa Bales entered as a courtesy runner for Quickle. Vance then blasted a towering home run over the left field fence that never landed.

Caitlyn Quickle (6-4) picked up the win for Fairfield. Quickle’s pitching line: 5 innings, 1 hit, no runs, no earned run, no walks, 8 strikeouts. Isabella Siegel (0-5) suffered the loss for Ripley. Siegel’s pitching line: 4 innings, 10 hits, 10 runs, 9 earned runs, 1 walks, no strikeouts.         
 
The Fairfield Lady Lions will continue Southern Hills Athletic Conference play Thursday, April 18 as they travel to Eastern Brown High School to play the Lady Warriors. Game time is slated for 5 p.m.
