Fairfield Lions open ’23 season with win over Adena

On Opening Day for the Fairfield Lions baseball team, they defended their home diamond on Monday by defeating the visiting Adena Warriors, 6-3.

Fairfield trailed 3-0 after the first two innings but rallied with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and four runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 6-3 win. 

Zane Matthews had a no-decision, as he tossed five innings on the mound, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks. Matthews added three strikeouts as he threw 76 pitches (40 strikes). 

Cade Miller was the winning pitcher, throwing the final two innings, allowing no runs, walks or hits, while striking out two batters, as he finished with 28 pitches (21 strikes). 

The Lions totaled three hits in the win, as Matthews was 1-for-2 with two runs. Corbin Willey went 2-for-3 (two doubles) with one run and two RBI.

Also scoring runs for the Lions were Dow Moon and Miller (two). Moon and Landry Hattan each drew a walk. Matthews and Wyatt Collins each were hit by a pitch, while Miller (two) and Matthews had steals. 

Fairfield (1-0) will face SHAC rival Lynchburg-Clay on Tuesday, March 28 at 5 p.m.
